Canada condemns "racist" TV show
By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's government has condemned a show by U.S. late-night television host Conan O'Brien that insulted people in French-speaking Quebec and seemed to suggest everyone in the province was homosexual.

Ottawa and the province of Ontario paid C$1 million (403,000 pounds) to help O'Brien -- who appears on the NBC television network -- bring his show to Toronto for a week to boost the city's profile after a deadly SARS outbreak last year.

But the federal government said O'Brien had gone too far with the show broadcast on Thursday in which he went to Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada.

"We want to disassociate ourselves from the comments which were broadcast last night because we do not support them in any way," junior government minister Mauril Belanger told Parliament.

At one point in the show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a hand puppet that is a regular on the show -- said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." It told another: "I can smell your crotch from here".

O'Brien's team were also shown replacing street signs in the province with those that read "Quebecqueer Street" and "Rue des Pussies".

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the programme as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.

Belanger did not commit to asking for the money back.

Peter Soumalias, a Toronto businessman who helped bring the show to the city, said the sketch was just a joke and called the furore a "tempest in a teapot."

"Quebec is the home of some great comics and comedians," he said. "They understand comedy."

No one at NBC was available for comment.

The complaints over the puppet's comments come on the heels of a similar uproar following criticism of European French-Canadian hockey players on CBC television by the country's best-known sports commentator, Don Cherry.

The "Late Night" show, which taped in Toronto all this week and featured guests such as Jim Carrey and Mike Myers, was broadcast in Canada by CHUM television, which said it regretted any offence that may have been caused.

"We offer our apology and assurance that it is never our intention to air programming that offends any of our viewers," the station said in a statement.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has landed in trouble before, most famously when it had an altercation with rap singer Eminem at a music awards show in 2002.

I didn't see it, but it seems obvious they're going to say things like that simply by virtue of the fact they have to.

wish I'd seen it though.....

I didn't see it but from what I've heard it doesn't sound much different than anything the dog has ever done before. He insults indiscriminately.

who cares.

I bet people in Quebec are laughing about it, and the people outside are making a big political fuss.

It seems pussyfooting around Quebec is the in thing to do again.

Did you hear that idiot Alexa Mcdonough?

Jeeez.....going on about "hate mongering?"

I finally got to see one of the Toronto Conan shows for the first time last night. It was hilarious! I hope he comes back. As for the racist allegations...meh. People are too uptight these days.

Go Leafs Go! ;)

It's an election year people. Quebec is a goldmine of votes if they can get them away from the previous party.

Also, this takes a bit of heat off the scandal.

This is what is known as opportunism.

you cannot use public money to create more tension in this country. Had there been equal jabs at english speaking canadians or recent immigrants then perhaps the situation would be differnt. However, i wonder what would happen had the sign said Plaza de le Loud itialians or a deragatory towards the east indians or black people immigrants in canada. There would be a big uproar i would tihnk. I think that much like jokes about natives for some reason we see it as being funny and acceptable and that people who think otherwise are freaking out. Perhaps we should ask the french canadians what they think. I know had similar comments been made abuot natives i would be very upset.
Also i am sure a similar situation would occur had the comments been made at recent immmigrants to canada or even english speaking canadaians

It is wrong and we should stop doing it funny or not. Much like how we somewhat stopped calling natives drunken indians funny or not. It hurts another group

I wish I could help you but I only have it on VHS.

It is somewhat funny.

I think people in the Ottawa are just being opportunistic about this event. It doesn't matter, in my opinion, it just raises the profile of Toronto in a world wide scale anyways. Some of the things that were said were definetly rude but not to the extend of demanding to call back all the funding. And I don't think it was racist, that is such a strong word.

now, more than ever, there's reason to pay off quebec advertising companies with $250 million hard earned tax dollars...

please don't leave quebec! is $65 million over the next four years enough to help pay for some canadian flags, help right our wrongs, and help heal the gaping wound made from conan's sharp racist remarks?

we *heart* you quebec!

happy valentines!

Exactly.

It showed the States that the only people wearing dust masks now are skilled trades people at the job site.

I'm over it, it's the Quebecois opinion I'm concerned about.

Regardless of how jokey it might have been (and I did see it) I think it's playing with a political powder keg and really, it's more fodder for the seperatists.

Actually.. I think one of the reasons they also picked on the Quebecois is because -as you all know- the show is still an American show. And I am sure there is alot of people in the U.S that still don't like the French because of their stand on the war. So that type of humour was catering partly to some people in the U.S. in a certain way IMO.

Jees man.

Have you ever heard of 252 million people within driving distance?

People like myself in the tourism industry?

Tourism generates billions in revenue for our country, it has a lot more to do with that and the lack of it since SARS than it does a national inferiority complex.
