2003 IN REVIEW

Best Series

Tie between
- ALIAS (brian michael bendis)
- SUPREME POWER (j. michael straczinski)

Honourable Mentions

THE ULTIMATES (mark millar)
ULIMATE SPIDER-MAN (brian michael bendis)
ULTIMATE X-MEN (mark millar)
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (j. michael straczinski),
THE PUNISHER (garth ennis)
DAREDEVIL (brian michael bendis)
THE INCREDIBLE HULK (bruce jones)

Best One Shot or Limited Series

JLA: Liberty and Justice

Most Pathetic Decline

Grant Morrison's work on 'NEW X-MEN'
Chris Claremont's work on 'X-TREME X-MEN'

(seriously, it's sad but i think these guys - who once dominated this industry - are washed up.)

not too sure how neil gaiman's '1602' fits in yet; the jury's still out.

DC stuff has been pretty boring and none of the independents are raising eyebrows.

most of the best writers seem to be flocking to marvel and marvel max these days.

thoughts?

I own one Comic... never could get into collecting them.

X Factor I think it is...
It was worth something, then they decided to print 10,000,000 copies and it is worthless now I'm pretty sure.

It's in the package with the Cable card I think.

Best Fanboy Moment

JLA/Avengers Limited Series - Superman fighting Thor; after being pummeled, Superman *catches* Thor's hammer and, with a final blow, he KILLS Thor. Thor's stronger teammates - Iron Man, Wonder Man, She Hulk and others - rush Superman in retaliation; they gang-beat him TO DEATH before Aquaman and Wonder Woman can push them off. (This series is not on the same level as the other books mentioned above, but it's a fun read.)

if you were ever a fan of comic books, now is the time to start reading again.

some of you may remember the HUGE leap in quality that occurred in the 80s when books like 'THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS', 'WATCHMEN' and 'V FOR VENDETTA' raised the bar for the entire industry.

well, a similar leap seems to be happening again and, interestingly enough, marvel (often thought of as being too mainstream to be taken seriously) is leading the charge.

marvel's ULTIMATE line - made up of THE ULTIMATES, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and ULTIMATE X-MEN - is now in full swing.

these books have redefined the classic characters as if they were originating TODAY - in today's world of u.s. hyperpower conspiracies, terrorism, middle east chaos, the internet, et al. - and the results have been some absolutely brilliant storytelling.

THE ULTIMATES (which is essentially the avengers) is now a superhero team sponsored by the U.S. military; they take their orders from bush/powell/rumsfeld and they carry out their missions with the strength, arrogance and righteousness of hyperpower u.s.a.

captain america - once an apple pie-eyed boyscout - has also changed with the times. now, as leader of the ultimates, captain america has become an eery reflection of modern day america; high on ideals but more than willing to bend the rules, sacrifice innocent civilians and even shoot people in the back in order to advance the interests of his country's government.

other superheroes participate in the ULTIMATE universe, not necessarily because they want to do the right thing, but because they like to be celebrities.

in other news, MARVEL recently launched its new *adult line* of books under the name MARVEL MAX. its best titles - ALIAS and SUPREME POWER - are among the best comic books ever produced.

ALIAS is about a former super-heroine who could not cut it. she simply could not compete with the better-known heroes like spider-man and the fantastic four, so she quit the game and developed a drinking problem. now, armed with a horrible inferiority complex, she works as a private investigator.

SUPREME POWER tells the story of what really would have happened if an alien child with superman-like powers crash landed in a corn field in kansas. in this version, the u.s. government raises the boy to be its ultimate weapon, brainwashing him from childhood with fairy tails of evil "mousey tongue" in china and middle east terrorists that threaten all things american.

if you are a fan of legendary alex ross projects like 'KINGDOM COME' and 'MARVELS', then you simply have to pick up 'JLA: LIBERTY AND JUSTICE'. i won't bother describing it. just get it.

oh yeah, and garth ennis is writing 'THE PUNISHER'; think 'PREACHER' with more guns. the title has been a bit more tame than the hardcore 'PREACHER' books but, starting next month, it will be published under the the marvel max name so the kid gloves are coming off.

dell rusk is the red skull. (note the letters ... muahhahahahhah.)

did you read that 'planet x' story arc? what a pile of garbage.

xorn, as a character, had some potential, as did the stepford cuckoos and the new school in general. the conclusion to that story was just brutal though.

H.I.G. - i have been waiting for the 'BATMAN: HUSH' trade paperback; the hardcover is too expensive.

'BATMAN/SUPERMAN' looks good too, but i have only skimmed them, so i'm waiting for that TPB as well. (i saw a scene where superman and captain marvel were facing off; reminded me of 'kingdom come').

i have not read EMMA FROST.

is SENTINEL the book about the rogue sentinel (from the x-men)? is it an 'iron giant' type premise?

Hush is supreme!
Not a big fan of DC 'cept for 'Bats but the batman/supsman is cartoony but riegns supreme.
Frost is actually pretty blah but the art is supreme.
Sentinel is the Iron Giant rip off but it's nice wholesome goodness.

that would be x-force #1. if you have it in mint condition, unopened in its original plastic bag, it's worth about $3. :p

the reason it did not go up in value is because that was during the heart of the horrible *splash page era*, when ego-maniac artists thought they could replace good writing with pictures of big boobs. the entire x-force series was crap.

I know, when it first came out within a month it was worth $7-10, then it dropped because like I said, reprinted or just decided to release too many copies of the original.

Not even close.

It's a 3D moving theater.
I can't even begin to tell you how amazing this ride is.

The entire sinister 6 are in it, and the 2 hour line weaves through the daily bugle.

the ongoing Lucifer is good, though the art always bugs me (they look like they're made out of potatos!! :( )

recently picked up NYX, which is some sort of new mutants style offshoot. candy raver girl in ghetto school finds out she has supernatural mutant abilities while in a fight with the latinos. the art is pretty. the story is lame at times but it's building towards something and with every issue i keep getting more into it.

everything else i've been reading is just older stuff, currently on back issues of Planetary (wow, i am so confused as to whats going on. its good though.) and Astro City (yay!)

and still waiting anxiously for the next MAXX papaerback. i'm missing issues 7 - 11 and 28 - 35 (or whenever they ended that series) and i really need to read the whole collection.

When you're 14 you want your comics to double as porn, true. But we're all grown me now. When we want porn we'll get the full-on shit and when we want to bask in an hour of colourful drawrings and nerdy sci-fi we get the comics.

That's the cool part of being grown up. We can do it all. :)

not a big deal, but this is not possible. if a comic sells enough that the publisher does a second printing, the reprint will be labelled as a 2nd print (or a 3rd print, etc.) and the original 1st print will be worth a lot.

with the X-FORCE title, there was initially a lot of hype because ego-maniac eric larson was doing it and everyone was splashpage-crazy back then.

eventually, saner heads prevailed and people realized that those comics were unbelievably boring to read. that's why the price went down. :)

i saw the ads for that. she's got beads and a soother in her mouth, right? it looked interesting but my comic-guy told me to stay away.

there was also a neat-looking ad about a girl who was running around with a velociraptor or something. (?)

and still waiting anxiously for the next MAXX papaerback. i'm missing issues 7 - 11 and 28 - 35 (or whenever they ended that series) and i really need to read the whole collection.
you liked MAXX? i have the first 20 or so issues of the original series and find them to be unreadable.

I really like where X-Force/X-Static went this year. Not too keen on the art, but the stories were great.

My picks...

best running series:
ASM 30-40ish
Transformers (just for *being* G1... too bad Dreamwave doesn't have decent writers).
Bruce Jones run on the Hulk (the first 5 or so issues).
Morrison's early New X-Men run

best mini-series:
High Road (if you didn't get it... do yourself a favour and pick it up)
