A few years back a roommate of mine was dating the night producer at CityTV - i.e. the fella who you might still see in the background when City did its newsreels late at night, sitting watching the traffic cams, etc...

Anyway he gave me a copy of one of CityTV's New Year's staff party videos, which are filled with bloopers and outtakes that are either sourced from City's own foibles or passed around the newsmedia for their own amusement.

Included on the tape were:

- dozens of outtakes from Speaker's Corner - featuring swearing, nudity, drunks and bums, kids peeing on the camera, nazi youth...
- a section called "naughty cameramen" featuring footage of people making out or upskirt shots taken by newscameramen at Skydome, including two infamous sex-in-the-Skydome-hotel moments, a couple having sex in an alley across the street from a 24 donut shop where a bunch of media trucks had gotten together to have coffee at 3am...
- muchmusic camera men doing funnels, etc poolside during the Winter in Miami (whatever it was called) specials...

I figure this stuff is part of one of those reels and it fell into the wrong hands. Martineau's reputation as an ass goes back years. Certainly my roommate's boyfriend knew about it. Don't get me started on Gallagher - he's a drunken twit and always has been.

Got this 5 mins ago from work

Citytv Toronto issues the following statement in response to off-air footage that has recently and illegally been circulated on the Internet:

TORONTO, Jan. 27 /CNW/ - I've been in the news business for over 35 years, and it is with huge regret that I find myself the center of the story.

Within the past 24 hours some videotape of a station promo session taped many years ago - material that was never telecast or ever intended to be - found its way to the Internet.

I'm personally mortified some tired, silly and inappropriate comments I made might damage the stellar reputation that Citytv has earned. I apologize. I'm so proud to be part of a news team that has always been instrumental in making a difference, and still leads the way in effecting positive change. I ask and hope that you'll judge me based on the work I've been part of for the last 30 years and not on a regrettable incident.

Gord Martineau
Anchor/Reporter, CityPulse News

For 25 years I have had the privilege of working with Gord Martineau; I know who he is as a man, I know what he values, and I know where his heart is. Gord is perfectly placed as our lead player in a news shop that respects all individuals. We are inclusive, we are fair, we are committed to reflecting every voice, every race, every face, every cause. We are respected for breaking barriers and celebrating each other's differences. We are fully committed to building bridges of understanding between individuals and groups.

Gord's attempt to be humorous - in an off-air exchange with a colleague many years ago -- was insensitive and inappropriate and he truly regrets his comments. This incident does not reflect his character, his professionalism or his body of work.

This is not only about Gord; this is about every member of our staff who, like Gord, all share values of respect, inclusion, fairness and social justice. While our hearts are absolutely in the right place, this is a case when, admittedly, the humor was not. Our values and commitment remain strong. I commit that we will be better, still human, and therefore still flawed, but better.

Vice-President, News Programming - Citytv Toronto

Either way, still funny.

*jeer*

yeah, dick jokes and limp wrist dancing routines stopped being funny in the fifth grade.

be as offensive as you want in your own time, just do it well. and if you're not going to do it well, don't subject others to it.

I think doing it poorly is only good when you're parodying (in this case) the homophobe or immature idiot who would make such jokes, and not when you actually endorse that type of idiocy.

so I guess if he was being ironic, it was good stuff. but that's not how I interpreted his behaviour.

are they addressing it, at all, on the 6 pm news?

or are they just releasing an internet apology, so they won't embarass themselves in front of the non-plugged in population?

"Tonight's top story on CityPulse at 6 is that I'm a fucking jerk."

I'm very upset Gord hasn't covered his own story yet.

I can't imagine anyone doing that without irony

which is why it should be done as half-assed as possible

whatever, he told some off-colour jokes in front of his friends, and they laughed because they're his friends
