both look to be created in the last week and seem highly suspicious... i mean, look at those photos!? is this a man or a board game character?

very strange... i will definitely be following it.

what (and whose) aims is this attack likely to serve?
do any of you know about the political background of norway?
is there a "muslim problem" there that homey was lashing out at?

norway doesn't strike me as a nation that even the most paranoid could imagine was 'besieged' by muslims. (i might be wrong)

the whole thing just doesn't seem on the level to me.

I've anecdotally heard that there are some serious zenophobic issues in the scandinavian countries. There is also a history of extreme and unexpected violence, with a number of mass shootings. The guy also looks like one of the terrorists from Die Hard, so I can believe it.

Looks like the predominantly white, conservative, and Christian conspiracy culture is fumbling to account for a suspect who is also (allegedly) white, conservative, and Christian. Lots of Islamophobia on display in the usual places. For instance:
Norway: Blast near prime minister's office in Oslo, page 1

For me, it's too early to speculate. Lots of wild rumours fly in the early hours of a major media event like this. All I can really say for sure is that it's a sad day for Norway.

Yup, expect retractions along the lines of "oh he's not a terrorist, he's just an angry white guy" in places that have already decided that this was done by Muslims.

Actually, this article on Salon is pretty bang on if you ask me.

The omnipotence of Al Qaeda and meaninglessness of "Terrorism" - Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com

Here's a quote from the original New York Times article:

Terrorism specialists said that even if the authorities ultimately ruled out terrorism as the cause of Friday's assaults, other kinds of groups or individuals were mimicking al-Qaida's signature brutality and multiple attacks.

"If it does turn out to be someone with more political motivations, it shows these groups are learning from what they see from al-Qaida," said Brian Fishman, a counterterrorism researcher at the New America Foundation in Washington.

So he's not technically a terrorist (presumably for being white & Christian) but he was probably inspired by Al-Queda so we should still be looking for Muslims anyway.

he apparently emailed out a 1500 page manifesto to all his facebook friends, and a smattering of other random people he thought would be interested, like mid level members of the 'True Finns' right wing political party in Finland.

It is an absolutely chilling document which demonstrates that every nuance of this act was calculated, intentional, and designed to encourage more of the same. It is readily apparent from the document that the whole reason he purchased his farm was to act as a cover for the purchase of massive amounts of fertilizer which he used in construction of the bomb. A demonstration of just how far back he had been planning this, and how much trouble he was willing to go to to see it to completion.

His aim - to remove multiculturalism in Europe and eradicate all muslims from the continent. An astounding level of obsessive detail, ranging from discussions of his favourite music to motivate him, to his plan to hire 'two high class model whores' to enjoy some posh french wine he purchased at an auction years prior on the night before his attack.

It is pretty much makes everything that much worse, because it demonstrates that while clearly a sociopath, he was rational, deliberate, and God knows how many other people like him might be inspired by what he did.

Step back for a moment and consider the following: If he was against Islam and "multiculturalism", why did he attack a block of government buildings in downtown Oslo, and a summer camp run by the ruling Labour party? Hmmm? There's a bit of a disconnection between what the media is saying and what he actually attacked. Whether he harboured resentments towards Islam, Buddha, Smurfs or whatever, those were not the targets of his attacks.

Apart from a smattering of a few words here and there, it almost reads like the guy who shot Gifford a few months back.

Nonsense. His target was the political machinery that promotes multiculturalism, not Muslims themselves.

The shooter's FB profile veers between references to lofty political philosophers and gory popular films, television shows and video games. The Facebook account appears to have been set up on July 17. The site lists no "friends" or social connections.

Breivik's profile lists interests including hunting, political and stock analysis, with tastes in music ranging from classical to trance, a hypnotic form of dance music.

Read what I wrote again -- we agree, his target was the Norwegian political establishment. Everything else is conjecture at this point.

Skim the manifesto. I'm guessing the media will catch up to this stuff in a few days. (Unless this is an insanely elaborate hoax!)

I blame vocal trance.

no, it really doesn't. while clearly fucked up, the manifesto is far a far more lucid exposition of his twisted principles than anything Gifford's shooter was writing (the latter didn't really expound any principles).

why would he aim for children ? why not walk into a government building and take out politicians ?
he's no martyr. he'll spend the rest of his life in prison.

more info on the shooter...

He was a youth and adult member of the conservative Fremskrittspartiet (FrP) or Progress Party, VG newspaper reports, remaining involved until 2007. The party's most prominent manifesto pledge is to minimize immigration.

His membership was confirmed by a senior party member, Jonas Kallmyr, who is quoted by VG as saying that encountering Breivik was "like meeting Hitler before World War II."

He did target an area with government buildings, including the Norwegian PM's offices. The youth camp was an annual event run by the PM's political party, and which (I believe) he described as a place that Norway's future political class could get to know each other. So he targeted their leaders of today, and was trying to wipe out their leaders of tomorrow.

The irony is that his actions will galvanize a response completely opposite of what he intended.

My bad. I'm looking more at the surface than the deeper meanings of either one's twisted take on the world around them.

Regardless, I'm curious to see what the courts will do with him there, and what the people's reaction will be towards whatever verdict/sentence gets passed down. I'm skeptical that any legal system is equipped to deal with this kind of action and the motivations behind it.

Condolences to the victims of both tragedies.

I read that the max sentence in Norway for anything is 21 years. Hopefully they'll make an exception (or at least stack up the 91 individual sentences to run consecutively instead of concurrently) for this guy and his barbaric acts.

I liked how the first reports, or maybe the current reports, say "terrorism is not confirmed"

THEY BLEW UP A FREEAAKIN BOMB.
