Can you still make friends online?

I was just wondering about this. I remember a few years ago when ICQ came out, it was so easy to just meet new people.

Now it seems that the internet is obssessed with dating, and porn. In fact I don't use ICQ anymore, only msn for keeping in touch with some old friends. Of course you can't meet 'new' people on it.

I'm finding my last university semester to be drainning, and often feel like I need a small break or distraction, that's why I ask.

Cheers

Ive met a lot of "random rave aquaintance's" on the web.

I remember going into the Electronic music chatroom on Yahoo and meeting tonnes of people, like three or four years ago.
It was cool.

not any more though.

I consider them to be more friends than aquaintances.

We all don't get to hang out as much as we should though.

Welcome to your Carlsberg years.

I'm everyones friend. When i'm not bored and don't have the energy to make worthless chitchat. The internet has kille my social skills. Juuuuuuuuuust kidding. I have never handled social pressures very well, i'm either a tyrant or a beggar.JJJJuuuuust kidding, i'm cool as hell.

I refuse to use ICQ anymore. Too many random men messaging me. I even put the message "If you don't know me don't bother me" in my ICQ profile/info but it didn't help.

For some reason about 95 percent of the men that ICQ'd me were from either Turkey or Egypt? Haven't figured that one out yet.

UBB ate my post when I hit preview reply, so instead of rewriting it, I will paste a handy AIM transcript from a chat I had with a(n online) friend a while back.

The point of my previous post was that I probably spend more time online now than I did in the past, but I spend much less time interacting with other people.

Session Start (AIM - aimee*******:matt*******): Sun Nov 30 21:59:52 2003
aimee: have you ever been to artofthemix.org?
matt: nope
matt: what is it?
aimee: It's worth a visit :) Site where people post mixtapes
matt: cool
matt: thanks sugar
aimee: It's handy when you're making a mix and don't know what to put after something, etc
aimee: ah mix tapes/cds
matt: heh
aimee: they're so good
aimee: I still have some that Ian Moore from the Orbital list sent me years ago
aimee: I had put out this message once (97ish/maybe 98) saying "hey anyone want to send me tapes of good stuff"
aimee: he made me a mix that i've since lost but still have the case.. GREAT mix
aimee: then every now and then he'd send another
matt: cool
aimee: and another guy made this series of mixcds for friends and would always send a copy
matt: youre a popular girl on this net
matt: you do know that , right?
aimee: heh
aimee: not anymore, really
matt: maybe not
matt: but you were
aimee: ah those were the days
aimee: I wish there was still some kind of place like the olist
matt: me too
matt: the net is less community it seems
aimee: But there just... isn't.
aimee: Less community, more cliquey
aimee: more stupidity
matt: yeah
aimee: Nobody ever meets anybody new online anymore. Even message boards are just filled with people who know each other IRL
matt: exactly
matt: i dont have any new online friends
aimee: the last person I really met online was matt, who I dated for a little while in 2001
matt: i wish i could meet more people online like back then
matt: esp more girls ;)
matt: its lonely for a geek like i out here
aimee: It is
aimee: used to be you could just look someone up by interest on Icq or whatever.. these days the kids don't even use icq and everyone ignores messages from people they don't know
matt: i wonder if this is just the natural process of things
matt: and that perhaps
matt: it will be that way again
aimee: I have a feeling that it won't
matt: or maybe not exactly the same thing
matt: but less of this
matt: but
matt: who knows
aimee: I think (and this is just a theory) that it used to be just the nerdy kids online, you know.. and now everyone and their bloody dog has net access.. but that former geekiness was a common link
aimee: brb I need to put my clothes in the dryer

I think that there are a lot of people on this board that I could be friends with but will never meet in real life. There are some truely great people on Tribe.
