Anyone running the Sporting Life 10km in Toronto this weekend?

I ran in it as well. First time racing in 4 years, and the last race I had done was this one back in 2005.

Felt pretty good and finished better than expected considering I just started training seriously again 3 months ago.

Not bad, but I could/should have done better.

Awesome weather made up for the piss poor situation at the end of the race...

Piss poor situation, what do you mean? I didn't really stick around, grabbed a banana and that disgusting cottage cheese and got out of there.

Should have ran faster. If you're the first one there, there is no line-up!

hahaha, true. i forgot about the fact that there was over 12,000 people in the race. when i was in there there were no lines and it was pretty calm and peaceful, but when i left it was starting to get busy.

i can't even imagine the chaos that would have erupted as more people got in there. 12,000 freaking people is a lot!!

lol @ the digusting cottage cheese, didn't even touch that shit.

I'm really just nitpicking, but the 'corral' at the ending was not big enough to properly accomodate that many people all at once.

I preferred the years where it ended at the Roundhouse, though I did enjoy running through the entertainment district that early on a sunday morning.

yeah i did, 3 spoonfulls later i regretted it! hahaha

you had a different perspective than mine i guess, i didn't see a problem with it. but now that you have mentioned it, when i left i walked along front and the amount of people spread across the road was crazy. i didn't experience that at all, just felt like a normal race to me.

yeah the roundhouse was a good finish, the last time i raced was in 2005 in this race and that's where it finished. what blew my mind was they were saying this was the 12th year with sporting life as the sponsor, that was when i ran my pb there. can't believe its been 12 years!!! fack! getting old.

Either which way, the thing I care about most (the weather) was freaking awesome, so I should stop whining.

The last time I ran this 'race' it pissed rain the entire time, which did not make for a great time.

Time to ponder a Half Marathon now; running 10K at this point isn't a big deal to me (my summer 'training' includes a brutal weekly 12K) so I think it's time to branch out and try something more hardcore.

The 'rents both run marathons making my 10K seem all the more weak, hahaha.

just go straight to the marathon.

I'm going to assume you've done one, so in that vein, what kind of prep did you do? Gradual increases in mileage or one of those fancy training 'schedules' that I know many people utilize?

I didn't actually.

But, to be honest I've never raced the marathon distance either. I've done numerous runs of 50km and my strategy is always to do them when I am in running shape as opposed to not. If I am considering a long run, then I will typically be running 14-18km 2-3 times/week, cycling for min. 3 hours once a week, and doing my regular hiking/climbing thing. Some weeks I'll run more or do a 25-35km run on a Saturday, but that's pretty much it. I am about as unscientific as it gets.

I actually said that because I think the jump from 10k to 21k is of little challenge to someone who is used to doing 10-16km training runs. You'll have to work hard to earn that 3:30/4 hour marathon, which IMO would be very rewarding, whereas I think you'll find the half pretty easy. I just want you to be challenged Chaos!

Yay to my first race in years! Finished the Sporting Life 10km in 47:50. The best part was running with friends :)

The thing I had forgotten about racing is how much it pushes me to perform. Nursing a hamstring injury for the last few years, I had lost confidence that I could really race. Having recently started in again, I find myself running more for completion and fitness than performance. This time though, I really pushed it and felt FINE after, and the day after!

Now I know I can really giver in my training runs, here and there that is.

.... and then my 2 cents for the half marathon. I kinda agree with Muad'ib. If you can run a 10km, then train for a 15km. Once you can run 15km, you'll be able to run a 21km come race time. I trained for the full Marathon and we never ran anything close to the full distance. That's what race day is for!

Nicely done. I totally know what you mean about not racing. I wasn't sure I would be able to run all that fast and had been lowering my expectations in the weeks leading up to the race, but i managed to beat them!!

Many thanks for all the advice, giving me lots to ponder.

My ultimate goal is to run the Marine Corps marathon in DC at some point because, well, to be honest, it just sounds so 'tough', lol.

I'm so glad it's nice enough to run outside pleasantly these days.

so, as some of you may have read, I ran my first race two weeks ago (sportling life 10k)

I didn't kill it, but I was also in the top 50% which strikes me as a reasonably good place to be. I'm considering doing the 10 miler in july, but that's 16k and I'm a bit worried that I might be trying to go too hard...is this a crazy idea or a logical step?

there's two months to train for it, I think i can do it, but I'm also a bit nervous about it.

*cough*

why don't you wait a few weeks to sign up just to see how you're doing with the training?

nah, all or nothing.

I just want somebody who isn't you to weigh in and say hey, that's mental or dude, you can totally do it.

I'm leaning towards the latter, but who knows.

The half marathon on the weekend was a tough, tough course - not even close to comparable to the last half I ran. There were a ton of hills, and while I train on hills on a regular basis, they still slowed me down substantially. I finished in 1:56:18 which is somewhat disappointing as I was aiming for several minutes faster. I am still trying to figure out what exactly happened, but it was a good wake up call to get my ass into gear for the next one. The weather was perfect for running and the fully catered brunch afterwards was lovely!

Tack One: You can totally do a 10-mile race in July. Follow the 10% rule (never increase your weekly mileage by more than 10% over the previous week) and you'll start running longer distances safely without risking overuse injuries. How far do you run each week generally?

Do it! You'll be fine, up your mileage a bit, but if you can handle the 10k you'll be fine. Akiras is right about the 10% rule, follow that and you'll be golden.

I was looking at that race as well, but maybe for the 5k. I want to see what I can do in a 5k after racing the 10k and surprising myself with my result. The only problem with that race is that it is 50 fucking dollars!!!

well, I did ONE 10k...

distance depends really, maybe 30k or so a week, but I'd step it up if I sign up for this.

You placed well though, and you don't just knock off a 10K without being in pretty decent physical shape, so I think you'll be fine unless you eat at Mandarin every day between now and the race.

Actually even if you stay away from the chicken balls you'll probably be alright.
