Guess I should've read the CNET article first about how 4k is useless to most ..back to my searching

Don't get me wrong, there is an improvement, it's just marginal these days since we are already on a 1080p standard. The move from 480p to 1080p was a lot bigger than the move from 1080p to 4k will be in terms of impact.

Certainly in the "bad old days" we were suffering from low res, it's just now we are further up the resolution curve so each new improvement is less impactful.

This is why "real future proofing" in TV's today is NOT buying a 4k tv, but buying a 4ktv that will be "HDR" compatible and able to handle all the extra colour information and meet the minimum brightness standard of this format. These colour and brightness improvements should be very perceptible improvements to the end user.

The new blu rays will be giving us 4k+HDR in the discs, but for this you need the right guts in your TV and the latest HDMI standard integrated through your entire signal path.

if i remember correctly ... LCD's/LED's are much better in brighter rooms than the plasma's...it's a brighter display. You'll have no problem.. i guess you can check which tv gives off the least amount of Flare

This is correct - LCD has naturally higher brightness which can help combat ambient light.

My Plasma suffers less than others in ambient light given a super fancy coating over top that helps reduce glare and less glass in front to minimize internal reflections - but needed these things as we are in a very well lit corner unit. Certainly critical viewing is best left to night time.

Unfortunately Philips seems to focus on the European market, but they have a very cool "moth eye" filter on their LCDs which make them even MORE awesome in well lit rooms:

I bought a fridge last night, Oooooh exciting boxing day purchases.

I really want a 55-70 inch TV but I have to wait a bit and my Panny 50 inch Plasma still rocks.

Question for those Re Vizio. are they really "that" good? I've read mixed reviews mainly about the product quality being an issue but the picture seems to score well.

Its mostly the value proposition - and generally not "messing with shit" too much when it comes to picture quality.

Sometimes Samsung is their own worst enemy, with aggressive settings that kind of mess stuff up. In the low-mid range Visio can be pretty good for picture quality out-of-the-box and be as good as say, the Samsung 100-250$ up in price...

thanks guys for our input. What about build quality and reliability?
I keep hearing that the remote gets messed up and that the TV won't turn on

The TRING rating site has calibrating settings for the visio.won't be perfect cus of the different room lighting but they say it' should be 95% perfect. If you can get 10 years of watching porn on them I'd say you bought a descent one.. I think the life of today's tv's are 10 years before you should need a new one. I got 10 years out of my no name Initial piece of crap lcd..now I have a cloud in the top right corner

As you may already know but just in case. There's 4 different classes of Visio. P class, M, E, and now D. They might use different remotes, some could be better when you move up in class I got my eye set on the M50 ( medium class)

After spending 4 days of reading up on TV reviews on the TRING site.. and going through 4 sets of eyes. I've decided to go with the Sony 50 inch 1080p W800C model.. $899 at bad boys ( i'll try and work him down a bit more :) )

it suits my needs better than the Samsung JU's which isn't judder free,, and the Vizio M's and E's which have more motion blur for sports ( + best buy is sold out of the fucking things anyway)

I've had a 4k computer monitor for over a year and could never go back to working on a lesser resolution screen. The extra amount of workspace makes content creation so much easier instead of having 3 or 4 screens side by side.

Having said that, I never watch TV on it and 4k content is hard to come by. When I do come across random videos or sample 4k video files straight from 4k capable cameras, it's brilliant sitting at arms length (28 inch monitor).

Would I buy a 4k screen just for TV viewing? Absolutely not.

As I mentioned earlier, I've seen a lot of screens but my Panasonic plasma is still one of the best tvs I've run across.

I'm old School and I find the newer screens almost too detailed.

Your screen should still be better than 95% of all LCDs made since your TV came out, which is probably why you think your TV is better than most other screens out there - because like, IT IS!!

What gen is it? 30?

I got the ZT60, last of the panny plasmas...

In other news, the OLED reviews of the new LG and Panny versions are on HDTVTEST:

Panasonic TX-65CZ952B (CZ952/ CZ950) Review
LG 65EF950V (EF950V/ EF9500) Flat OLED TV Review

Panny has the edge, but costs a shit ton more

I'm into photography so I do my editing on the Asus PA249Q , I calibrate it every 3 weeks with the x-rite i1 pro.. it makes things look real pretty :)

Does your panel drift that much in three weeks you need to recalibrate all the time?

How many corrections are you making every 3 weeks, is this normal for people super keen on photography or because the Asus panel and LCDs in general for consumer displays just need this attention if accuracy is paramount for your use case?

Would you be doing it less with a more professional grade monitor?

They say you should calibrate them every 3 weeks or every ( 200-300 hrs) even for the monster Ezio Monitors they say every 200-300 hrs you should recalibrate them.

I go through everything..colour check, flare correct, QA, and Uniformity..the x-rite i1 Display set up is easy. Takes about 15 mins to do everything.

I have to agree, I have the ST50 and it's really great.

But this is my problem, Ill probably have a 50inch in my HT setup as the Panny is better served there. meaning I'll grab another 50 inch to replace it in the family room.

The only real issue is I wanted a 60-70 inch in the home theatre but if my 50inch is better suited then I have to consider it

Now that I have a better tv...when I go from my calibrated monitor, which is the softer look and more on the red side, when i go back to the tv , the tv looks too blue, so now I have to watch the tv in Cinema Home mode for the same softer look. Wish I could use this x-rite for the tv but you need other tools, if I had a projector I could've used it on that.

I have a 55 inch Samsung plasma in my "rec room" that I picked up 5 years ago from Sears on a black Friday blowout.

Doesn't get a lot of use compared to the Pioneer which is my family room but I'm going to wait a few years and see where the technology goes and then look to replace and do a full home theatre upgrade.

These days I spend more time listening to the radio and doing crafts with my daughter rather than watching tv or movies.

^^ i think thats best for now to be honest - with HDR only just now making it to the top tier sets and with *promised firmware updates* for others I feel like if you are looking for a TV the best bet is to do it 6-18 months from now when some of this is more solidified, at least from a future proofing perspective.

Depends on the use-case and your budget and your needs of course - if you need a secondary TV in another room likely no need to wait - get something now!

If you are looking for that cadillac TV to last you 8-10 years, I think unless you're willing to fork out more than 5k on these OLEDs from Panny/LG that there is a bit of risk going with a 4k LED LCD these days which may not have the right HDMI interconnects/guts to handle HDR (thought the top end offerings do have more of this lately).

Once HDR starts making its way to the medium/lower tiers I think will be a better time to buy.

I wasn't sure about the black levels. Color was a concern. Then I turned my new projector on for the first time and was wow what the fuck was I thinking this blows every TV I've seen out of the water.
