ha.
It's true though...Murray was probably tipped off that he should show because he was garaunteed the Oscar...so when he didn't win he was probably in a little shock.

That's alright, because he didn't deserve it anyways (and I'm saying that as a Murray fan). There were even a few better comedic performances (such as Paul Giametti, as Oh No! mentioned).
It's not like the Academy Awards have any merit, so he's probably better off never winning one...it'll play well with his cool, loveable loser schtick.

remember after he lost the award, billy crystal made some joke about 'don't leave, bill' and the camera showed him looking less than impressed, like he was about to get up and leave?

I think he was just kidding around.

but seriously, why should you clap for some other actor winning an oscar? you're not honestly happy about it, so fuck it.

and it's just a stupid oscar. I'd storm out and stick my ass in the face of the academy and all the stupid fakey faker good losers for setting me up to lose on tv.

to see Bill Murray put on a big fake smile and take the piss would've ruined him for me anyway.

holy fuck. i think some people have never actually watched Bill Murray. His whole schtick is being pissed off. It would be out of character for him to clap. it's part of what makes him one of the funniest people in showbiz.

the look on his face must have been priceless

ps. beg to differ.
pps. usually jump the shark is used to refer to tv shows that tanked, not actors and the roles they play.

you're close.the term 'jump the shark' refers to tv shows that try lame ideas to rejuvinate a tanking series ie. 'happy days' episode where Fonzi jumps a shark-thus 'jumping the shark'.

I agree wholeheartedly, since I do the whole pissed off schtick constantly. Of course, it's not funny, but regardless, you can all go fuck yourselves.

yeah yeah, that's what i meant by shows that tanked.
as in, the show where they "jump the shark" is usually to refer to some stunt (aka fonzi's waterskiing fiasco) that is first sign that the show is tanking.

If you understand Bill Murrays comedy, than it just sounds like him being funny, and the media taking it out of context. Maybe Umas ugly dress was getting old, and someone just needed to disturb the shit.

did anyone think murray deployed some wicked cool irony when he referred to sophia twice as a great american girl? or was i just reading too much into his intro for LIT?

would that be because he somehow managed to get a piece of that Scarlett Johannssen? :D

when he was giving the intro for lost in translation's best picture nomination, he stated twice that sophia coppola was a great 'american girl'l. he's so dry i couldn't tell if he was just being the patriarch of hilarity he embodies or delivering a jab to the media who crowned sophia their darling of the week, emphasizing the 'daddy's little girl' aspect of her relation to her father.

when i heard Murray call her a 'great american girl', i actually thought it was some reference to a FF Coppola film that i wasn't getting! haha

I thought he was just riffing on "American Girl", a reference to the Tom Petty song
