I've never been to a Big DJ Small Club event before, but I have heard that the parties can be pretty good....

My buddy told me that this event on Wed might bring out Pete Tong which has me quite excited, even though I got an exam Thurs afternoon.

Is this all bullocks??? I don't think I wanna miss a much-needed study nite on Wed, but for Tong I would.....

Thx for da help :)

it's true, it's true....Pete Tong is the "Big DJ"....and in reference to Poker Face's comment....sure he may be "cheese", but there's a reason the man has the highest rated dance music show in the WORLD.

But something you may not understand, or may choose to ignore, is most "commercial" dance music in the UK is considered "underground" in North America...shit, if you take a look at Tong's essential playlist, most of those tracks won't even make it to a "dance" chart in North America.

Actually, the answer lies in the question 'Just how OLD is pete Tong?'. His show is rated so highly because it's been running for freakin' eons. Persistence pays off!

True, but what I consider cheese really is probably different then what other people may not consider cheese.

That still has nothing to do with the fact that Pete Tong sucks.

Wow, that explains everything, doesn't it?....

There's lots of people out there who think that Sasha and Digweed suck....that Paul Van Dyk sucks....that Choo-Choo Romero sucks....god, there's even people who *gasp*, think Danny T sucks!

But hey, to each their own, right?

No, it's a scientific fact that he sucks.

Popularity, money, and longevity doesn't mean that he's a good DJ.

Ok, define "good DJ" for me.

Why is everyone so down on Tong??

I like him a lot. I thought his Twisted Beats CD was pretty good.
CD 1 sucked, but CD 2 was great.

His MOS compilations suck ass, but all MOS compilations do, so its not really his fault. And some of his BBC Essential Mix sets really rock. PLus, I love how he says 'stonking' in that British accent.

someone who sets the standard for other djs - pushes boundaries - breaks fresh, new tracks not relying on the standard fare - good technical skills - good programming skills...

pete tong is the host of a radio show which has djs that display some if not all of those traits.... that does not make him a good dj.

Isn't a good DJ someone who plays music people like listen and dance to? Especially new music.

my 2 cents...

Big DJ, Small Club

I heard Tong at Homelands three years ago and the boy was sound...His set was killer, musically and technically. I say give Tongy a chance:D

Hey, where's Christopher Lawerence playing Wednesday? Says in Eye he's at Tonic, but the Events Forum says otherwise. I thought maybe he wuz gonna be the Big DJ(ooooo)

Do the promoters for “Big club, small DJ” keep the same artist for all of their advertised events? The event is also advertised for here in Vancouver and I am curious about knowing if it will also be Pete Tong playing?
Incidentally, more then just a DJ in my opinion as he has helped the maturing of underground music regardless of genre. I am not actually sure why so many people insist on discrediting an artist when they reach a level of familiarity in the mainstream, I guess its just not cool to have the same taste as others. Its all gone Pete Tong man!

First off, Tong plays some of the most upfront material out there, hands down. His crate probably contains tracks that us commoners will get our hands on in the fall/winter, if not longer. I remember in a discussion about this topic before coleridge saying that he displays a musical 'snapshot' of what to expect in the future, and I agree. He may not push bounderies really, and he may not embody a sound like digweed, sasha, howllels, et all, but he just doesn't strike me as that kind of dj. Due to his longstanding radio 1 show, Tong has a 'job' to do more or less, and I think he does a pretty good job of doing it.

Does that make him a good dj? No, absolutly not. A good dj is composed of many different factors, but Tong certainly excells in the 'tunage' (so to speak) quality.

Basically, if you're going to go and see him, expect to rock out to some serisouly upfront material.

Expect to hear great tracks, not necessarily a great dj. Whether or not that is what you're into is up to you.

peace.

To each their own I guess.

I've never seen Tong or Danny T... but
I enjoyed Paul van Dyk and Sasha & Digweed.
I'm sure there'd be many that would agree with me that they are good dj's and then there are those that will disagree.

Ah well... if everyone loved every dj, it'd be a pretty fucking boring 'scene'.
