ooo, the IT power!

i have a lunch today because yesterday was 2 for the price of 1 falafels at ali baba. so i had one yesterday and the other one for today. 2 day's of lunches for $4 is practically cheaper than bringing leftovers.

but tomorrow i'll see if those places tack mentioned do take out.

Have you guys ever made hot and sour soup?

It's basically water, chicken broth + red vinegar OR white rice vinegar OR red wine vinegar or regular vinegar (the least desired option since it's so strong with a dull flavour) + any kind of hot sauce or chili oil.

Throw in sliced mushrooms, tofu, bamboo shoots and meat (optional).

You boil the shit out of it, stir in cornstarch and water to thicken.

Tada.

That's a simple version. If you want to jazz it up, add soy sauce, sesame oil, fungus, lily buds, slice your bamboo shoots, ground pork bits, pork tenderloin slices, green onion, ginger bits if you're sick....

looks easy, but Hot & Sour requires a proper balance to be successful. Too many ingredients can ruin it, or too much of one ingredient can overpower other ingredients (green pepper or chicken especially). The amount of vinegar is also crucial.

My pops makes the best soup I've ever had, but that only comes around a few times a year. Been planning on making some using his recipe for years now, however watching him make it humbles my culinary skills.

Think I'll try a few spots suggested in this thread since I'm generally disappointed with what I usually get, but my expectations are rather high.

I remember River Tai at Harbourd & Spad was pretty good... little lacking in some ingredients, and a tiny bit acidic, but pretty good nonetheless. Haven't had it there in years tough.

I like thinner hot and sour soup, the slimey ones always feel gross going down.

Miso: now we're talking. Hijack!

edit: littlejon! What's good homie.

I agree. But with Chinese cooking, most chinks eyeball shit cuz we develop a way to tell what something tastes like without tasting it.

But for you gentiles, generally 2 tsps of vinegar, 1 tsp of cornstarch (or more if you like it thicker) and about 5 cups water, 1 cup broth. 1 tsp salt. As much chili as you want.

sukho does deliver and is so close to your house.
actually, it is about half-way between yours & mine.

they have regular hours again, the cook has come back full time, i believe.
we can eat there anytime! so close, so tasty!

sukho has tons of great food from a real thai chef, and a very relaxed vibe.
plus they have delicious soups.

"In optics, a prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. The exact angles between the surfaces depend on the application. The traditional geometrical shape is that of a triangular prism with a triangular base and rectangular sides, and in colloquial use "prism" usually refers to this type. Some types of optical prism are not in fact in the shape of geometric prisms. Prisms are typically made out of glass, but can be made from any material that is transparent to the wavelengths for which they are designed.

A prism can be used to break light up into its constituent spectral colors (the colors of the rainbow). Prisms can also be used to reflect light, or to split light into components with different polarizations."

The only thing that sucks about them, been a regular customer of them for 6 years now. We always call in for pick up if we don't feel like cooking dinner.

Speaking of hot and sour soup now that I'm feeling under the weather and looks like im gonna get sick. I need to get one later.

I havent been to yeugh tung in a while yet, maybe 2 years. but I've been to golden thai in the last few months and it's still hands down my favourite thai place in the city.

Continuing the hijack...We went to Mengrai Thai on the weekend and it completely blew any Thai restaurant I've been to in this city out of the water. Up there with Vanipha Lanna IMO.

I had one at Lee Garden and was contented with it.

But nothing compares to Tremendous at 5am drunk off your ass.

Ahhh the good ol' Mississauga days.

Tremendous has such a weird vibe once the bars let out.

There's almost an air of menace in the room; all those drunks and no more alcohol!

it does, but it's too expensive for everyday.

I still stand by golden thai as the best overall thai restaurant...

The Chinese did invent soup.
And we don't eat soup with chopsticks. We don't eat it with anything.
