Well there's one DJ that won't be coming back to Canada anytime soon.

The man was seriously pissed off. The needles were skidding like crazy, the mixer was fucked up, the sound kept dying out, etc. etc. Totally unprofessional of the promoter not to get the equipment checked out beforehand. Especially for a techno DJ. They're tend to be very picky about that stuff.

Also, I think the promoter was also very much aware of the "other" event being held at the Roxy Blu that night (he denied it in another thread on this board). Sorry but techno crowds don't mix very well with 30-somethings in suits and leather jackets.

The whole thing was just terribly organized.

Still, Sims played a very decent set (especially towards the end). And for what it's worth, I had fun.

Just to let everyone that might have heard Ben SIms for the first time........he is a lot better then what we heard last night...too many technical issues with the mixer, decks etc.....good effort on behalf of Ben Sims....where are the techno people in T.O....the place was pretty dry?????????

Ben Simms seemed like he was having issues with the volume on the mixer. I still stuck through it just to hear the dope techno tracks that he was playing. I still think he could have played better, It was a Rane mixer, I think he just had a bad attitude after his records skidded off the turntable.

WTF is up with dudes that wear suits. Honestly I was laughing at the dudes wearing cheap ass suits chocking on the cigars that they were trying to smoke.

Rosey and Beaker finally cool to meet you!

i feel for sims, i really do. shotty needles, a shotty mixer, no monitor. ouch.

it was amazing he was still working the decks as well as he did, no skipped beats or anything. i really would like to see what he can do with a proper set up, cause he was laying down one dope cut after another.

as for the suits, i didn't much mind their presence...tsall good, if they wanna techno treatment, they deserve a techno treatment.

dekoze was fine actually.

i enjoyed the first half hour/hour of sims' set. he played pretty hard stuff with some sweet basslines. then things seemed to lighten up and i wasn't as into it. i personally would have preferred the other direction, programming-wise. technically, he was solid. too bad the system was giving him so many problems. after hearing the sound cut in and out for 10 minutes, i gave up and went home.

That's too bad. The sound at The Roxy is usually pretty good. I hope he's back sooner then later as I couldn't make it out.

Peace.

nor could I. However, after reading these posts... I don't know if I'm at all upset about it.

First off, the promoter (me) is not a sound technician, I work for the bar it's their responsibility for equipment upkeep! Secondly I found out about the little function the day of because of the shotty old owner, not handing his old bookings over until last minute, it was as much of a surprise to me as it was to you! Deko-ze had few problems with the sound, there WAS a monitor! It just kept cutting out because someone spilled a drink on the mixer. Ben Sims will be back because we talked about it. He realizes that it was not my fault. Our sound guy decided to show up at like 1 am. After that the sound was fine! This would not of happened and will not happen again as long as I am the head promoter for Roxy. Do you not think I feel for everyone including the dj?? The mixer he didnt like is a fucking $7000 mixer top of the line Rane, everywhere uses it System, Guv, Tonic so... Sorry...that's all I have to say...well...he will be back FOR ME!!!
He felt bad because he said he could of played 50 time better.

The reason the "suits" were there, was because the Roxy had another event scheduled for that night. Some kind of fundraiser or something. So the suits were not there for Ben Sims. They just wandered in from downstairs, and probably didn't know what techno was, not to mention who Ben Sims is.

For all the buzz there were certainly alot less people there then expected!!??

Techno does not live in this city...if so where???

You want big names in clubs you gotta come or it won't happen ever!

We lost big time last night...thats it...Thanks to the people who came and showed their support even if it was only for a half hour!!! Marco Carolla or Oliver Ho...at this point I think not!!

As a techno dj who likes to fuk with his records, I STILL hate Rane. I don't care HOW good the output is - crossfaders, volume sliders and individual eq's SHOULD BE THE LAW!

(sorry about the Sims event not going off! Techno IS alive in this city...it just takes persistance and coaxing!)

Okay time for my little rant:

It's funny that stupid Rane mixer is EVERYWHERE and I know so many people that HATE it. No matter how much I play on it I'm still uncomfortable with it. A friend of mine just started playing on in recently and he declared the same thing to me ... "I hate it"

I don't understand the logic in building a top of the line club mixer that's based on the ergonomics of a mixer designed in the 70s.

I think it's a beautiful piece of equipment with stunning sound quality and build quality. However I don't think it's suited to the modern DJ ... only those fat house DJs who continue to live in a different era.

We should start a petition to have all the clubs switch to the new Rane:

I haven't tried it yet, I'm hoping those faders aren't sticky though.

Nice way of shucking the blame.
As you're the promoter shouldn't you make sure everything is working well? Even if you don't setup, config or fix the stuff verifing it all works correctly is the smart and professional thing to do.

I agree the rane is built nicely but the knobs have to go!

At least it is better then the standard cheesy club rane that only has the master eq!

True. That old school Rane that still pops up around the place (backroom at System for example) is crap.

All I ask for on the rane 2016 is faders and the ability to monitor more than one channel at once.
