entering the sellfone revolution.
wanted advice.

theres a new deal out: $25 for free evenings and weekends and lunch hour plus 50 minutes daytime with Telus. But I hear their phones stink. I'm mostly going to use it during the eves and weekends. I've held out this long b/c I think most people with cellphones use them in an arrogant manner. But there have been times where I could have really used one.

Advice?

actually, telus has the best phones but the worst signal.

that $25 dollar deal sounds good but find out what is included in terms of messaging and display....you'll probably discover that it goes up to $35 before tax to have voicemail with call display or whatever.

i had great difficulty with telus/clearnet in the queen/spadina area, so i switched to fido, and they're ok.

telus has better plans and better phone selection than fido

bell has the best service (from what i hear)

FIDO -> for $30 a month i get:
- free evenings (after 7) and weekends,
- 100 free minutes
- free voice mail and call display

...the only additional cost is $6 a month for some shit that you have to pay for on all networks

I have been with all kinds of different service providers!!!!

I've now been with Fido for 3 years!!!

Awesome service(just ask for a free phone)
Good prices!
Awesome signal(don't go out of major cities,no analog)
No contracts!(so if you don't like them, say good-bye)

I called them up the other day and said I want a new phone, and they sent me a $550 phone. they would have sent me their top of the line $650 phone if I had wanted it!

$40/month

300 minutes anytime!
unlimited evenings and week-ends
call display
call forwarding
call answer
text messaging
internet access

Telus has some retarded thing with their voicemail - you only get three voicemails on the basic service. if you want unlimited you have to pay more. so, basically that would cover two hangups and one message, then you are shit outta luck if someone wants to leave a message.

lame.

i use fido - if you plan on using it outside of any city you will not get coverage. that's the only downside.

i used to be with telus, loved the phone hated the fact that if i was in a big building or mall i had no signla and could not even check the time.

switched to rogers, hate the phone but the signal is better.

i pay $43/month including all taxes and network fees for 125 minutes + unlimited evenings and weekends after 6 (with telus it was 7), and the advanced messaging package.

I have the same plan.. but they're no longer offering it to new customers, my friend tried to get that plan but they told her it's no longer available...

Glad I got that plan when I did, think I'll be sticking with it for a while...

Telus has the best priced plans, fron what I can tell... Thats why I chose them.

But, no matter who you go with, you'll get the best service if you take a busines plan over a regular user plan. For whatever reason, and I'm not even sure if the service is divided into 2 tiers, but when I switched the service became a 100 times better. My phone never cuts out now, whereas it used to from time to time. It seems to be alot more clear in reception dept. too!

code.

the good thing with Fido is that you can buy any GSM phone that has a North American radio and is SIM-free.

I've been with Telus/Clearnet for two years now...and I'm on that plan that you mentioned....$25/month gets me unlimited evenings and weekends, free weekday lunch hours between 12pm-1pm....and 50 minutes for the other times.

I love my Sanyo 4500....and it would take a lot for me to change to Bell/Rogers/Fido....

Bell

I have been with Bell for just over 2 years now, and don't have any major complaints.

My circumstances are a bit different than most, however, and I think those warrant being with bell:

1. i live in the 519
2. i work in the 313 / 734 (michigan)
3. i have a 416 cell

.. plus do lots of driving back an forth through ontario and michigan, so the analog feature is a must. :)

the only downside: i wasn't too happy with the phones i got to pick from.

peace,

sabina

So ,,,, like,,,, do you have "hoes in different area codes"?

haha

thanks ally'all for the advice. I 'll check out fido and telus. Never been a fan of rogers, although, when we went camping to Algonquin, my friend accidentaly forgot to clear out his cellphone. So it was ringing in his bag in the middle of BigTrout LAKE! AND we were lost! What classic moments. <did i mention we were canoeing on shrooms?>

I've been with them for at least 2 or 3 years... but thing is I was on one of their regular plans for almost 2 years, then I switched to pay-as-you-go for a few months, and then switched back to a regular plan a couple of months ago... but when I switched back the last time, they put it under a new account, not the old one... so I'm thinking they may not recognize that I've been with them for 2+ years...

My nokia is on it's last legs, the screen keeps flickering... I guess I'll just call them and see what they say .... did you ask for a new phone straight out? did you use the friendly approach or the hard ass approach?

IMO the friendly approach gets you better results.

"I've been a loyal customer for x years, and I totally tell eveyrone how much I love your service BUT....."

They fully shell out shit to people like this, as it's nothing but positive advertising.

The hard ass people tend to continue to complain. I got my $45/month bill reduced to $30 for the next 6 months 'cause I did the nice approach.

I was honest with them!

I said I want a phone that is internet ready. I non-chalantly told them that they either give me a new phone or I can go to rogers and get an internet phone free. he said "then you have to sign a contract" I said "so". He said "you'll have your phone by wednesday"

I've phoned before that and gotten a new phone twice for breaking it and twice for losing it. I've also phoned for friends and gotten them new phones as well!

So I'm sure they will give it to you.

My advice is don't threaten unless you're willing to follow through and don't say please!

Maybe Roger's doesn't suck so much...

I've been thinking about changing my plan from Roger's... but reading this thread, I think I might not.

With Roger's, for $30/month, I get:

- Free evenings (after 6:00 pm) and weekends
- 100 anytime minutes
- free voice messaging
- free call waiting or call display
- but they make you sign a 1-year contract
- my phone SUCKS

I pay an extra $4 to get both call display and call waiting.

Reception is OK.... nothing special I don't think. But if you're all around the province, Roger's has the best coverage (the most antenna thingies).

Woohoo... thanks for the advice Swenard, my P280 will be here Tuesday :D

It took a bit of haggling and I had to talk to 2 different people because I was on pay-as-you-go for a while, but I got the phone! :) It turns out I was fido customer longer than I thought, since '98, which is why they gave it to me...

ooooooooo...that p280 is a very cool phone. I like how it can be used anywhere in the world and the l'il joystick thingy rocks. The only problem is Fido only covers metropolitain areas, how're you gonna use all those features?

I'm with Telus, have been for a year and a half and I'm pleased. They're big on features like call display, call waiting, call forwarding, and their browsing plans are excellent (if you enjoy browsing from your phone which I do)

For $50/mth (including taxes) I get:

100 anytime minutes
Free evenings and weekends (not sure if it starts at 6 or 7)
Mini-surf browsing plan
Call display
Call Waiting
Voice Mail (yes it is that stupid 3 message rule, and the messages can only be a minute long):(
Call forwarding
digital/analog coverage (digital in a surprising number of small cities/large towns)
went mth-mth (most expensive when buying phone) and still got an upgraded phone for $50

I'm on the 44th floor of one of the bank towers and the reception sucks up here but I haven't had any issues anywhere else

I'll show it off at Pappa tonight

Steve
