i just came back from the hotdocs film festival, and saw some really good documentaries. my fave by far was this one when translated called "man-made women". to make an hour long movie short, it was the beauty pagent circuit in Venezuela, that stated basically every woman who lived there strived to be Miss Venezuela their entire lives. the topics that kept coming up included:
*little children were pressured into modeling schools at 6
*nose jobs and boob jobs were normal..because smiling made their noses ugly.
*"we smoke, so we arent hungry. when we want food, we have a cigarette!"
*fake breasts inserted in the clothing to create the illusion of bigger breasts
*one girl called home crying to her mother saying that she was hungry, tired, her feet were bleeding (from parading around in crazy tall heels) and she wanted to come home. the mothers reply was "bullshit, you stay there, and you win."
you get the idea.
so what are your thoughts about beauty pagents? is it only me who is repulsed seeing young children being pushed to become beautiful-usually by a mother living her dreams through her child? i personally think the whole beauty pagent thing is one twisted, twisted event.
