BB10 launch

so a blackberry "partner" just put in an order for 1 million bb10 phones.

that's huge. considering various US analysts had claimed bb10 would be dead on arrival. others estimated shipments this year at under 1 million.

internet chatter says at&t sold out it's pre-order allotment in under 2 days. preorders just started in the states. but this order is probably from an international carrier.

i played with the z10 last night for the first time. really nice. very smooth and well put together for a brand new OS. it will only get better as it gets updated.

the touch keyboard is much better than i expected. i thought i'd need a q10 but i could definitely live with a z10. i can't wait for our april hardware upgrades at work.

New OS update improves the low light camera performance...

Haven't had an opportunity to test it out yet, but crackberry.com has some feedback.

Love this phone and the new OS.

also majorly improved battery life according to the guy who let me mess around with his phone.

he also loved the blackberry balance feature that separates work and personal. it allows for apps to be installed in the personal side.

another guy who works for the gov and has a bold was pretty jealous. his phone is locked down.

RIM's early success is attributable to people wanting smartphones but being unready to use touch screens. However, the tactile appeal blew up in RIM's face as the market got more comfortable with touch.

For corporate...I'm digging it. The workspace design is awesome, and the simplicity of securing it is excellent. The touchscreen kb of the Z10 is shitty compared to swiftkey/Android...but overall I think it has legs.

Earlier today we saw the huge crowds that were drawn to Selfridges to pick up a new BlackBerry Q10 and as it turns out they were a bit bigger than we originally thought.

According to Seeking Alpha, Selfridges completely sold out of Q10's today. They had 2,000 units at the start and ran through their entire supply in just 90 minutes -- that's about 22 phones per minute. We do have to factor in that there were multiple people buy more than one device at a time, but it's still a pretty impressive number.

Even after the stock was depleted, there was still a lineup of people hoping to secure a device for tomorrow when stock is (hopefully) replenished. When a manager was asked how sales compared to the BlackBerry Z10, she said it was "leagues beyond anything they had seen."

I'd say that's a damn good start for the Q10. Of course we definitely hope to see more of this next week when the Q10 is released in Canada as well.

Really? Is a keyboard really that big a deal still to people? After using swift key on my nexus 4, I could never go back to inputting words by individual keystrokes.

am going to go back to bberry after trying nexus 4

why?

for the simplest reason; keyboard

i tried the keyboard on the Z10 and i like the stock android on my nexus 4 WAY better.

i do not understand how swift key is useful for anything other than one handed input in portrait mode. in landscape its useless and not as fast and two dexterous thumbs IMO

It is to me. I can pound out an email way faster on a BB keyboard than I can using swype on my android phone.

do you guys mostly type/swype in portrait or landscape?
i dont know how people can deal with the slowness and annoyance of portrait mode input.

I think Kuba is speaking of the physical keyboard that is out for the Q10 (released in the next couple of days). If it's anything like the Bold 9900 (which it is supposed to be), it is a freaking dream to type on. For those who routinely bang out long emails, it is way superior to any virtual keyboard. On my 9900 it was basically the same speed of input i had on my desktop or laptop keyboard.

I am really thinking about passing my Z10 to the wife and picking up the Q10..........

Yep I am still carrying a Torch but am looking to swap it for the Q10 once I can on my corporate phone... This is because I have to type long emails.

Looking HTC One vs the new motorola/google phone for personal... Where my typing is not as central to my usage model.

it is literally impossible to type as fast on a phone with two thumbs as you can on a full keyboard with your hands.

its not even comparable.

tactile input is def something people crave and it makes sense some will prefer it over others.

i have typed on a BB keyboard and have no idea how people would rather type on that vs a touchscreeen, i find it slow by comparison, as its a barely register tap on the screen vs depressing a key.

but to each their own. ;)

I always use swype/swiftkey in portrait mode on my devices and with a single hand use. Whether that be my thumb or my index finger...depending on how I'm holding the device.

I couldn't see how landscape mode would help cause it would mean having to swipe a further distance across the tablet. The beauty of portrait mode is that the keys are closer together hence not having to move your finger/thumb too far to get to the keys.

At least 2 people at my work. Ordered them a couple weeks ago...they'll be here next week.

I don't blame 'em. "Tactile keyboard", I said, their ears perked up and they said "that's the phone fer me!"

thats because they use blackberries, and its taken 3 years to long to get something that supposed to be glorious but falls short of glorious by about the ' orious ' part.

Well...I can only imagine the tactile will be better than the z10. The onscreen keyboard is frickin abysmal. The screen rotation is slow as heck...so I wouldn't want one personally, but there are lots of execs who like some of the options..

I can see how the Q10 bridges much of this.

Our execs have been envious of the iphone-toting, no-security-having(literally, not even a password to get into their devices) execs in the same industry in the US for a long while so this is a nice compromise.
