Bars open later (and serving later!) during World Cup?

I can't find anything online about this, but on the front page of today's Metro there's talk of extending last call to 4 or 5am to accomodate soccer fans tuning into the live games of this years's World Cup in Japan and Korea.

I'm hoping that a sort of general law will be passed allowing all establishments to continue serving past 2am, not just sports bars showing the games.

The way the article words it (and I'm not typing it all out) is that it would be an application submitted by the city.

If it all goes through we'll be able to drink until sunrise for almost the entire month of June!! :D

This is going to fucking rawk! I swear I hope the dumbass Lastman stays away from this - that cunt is poison. I want somewhere to drink and watch games!!!

It could get ugly....

Especially whence the English beatings begin......Look out BatiGoal, Veron and Crespo - England will not be stopped.

HAHAHA, what are they thinking ! Nice idea, but it's going to cause some drinking related problems. With the time change however, it's the only way for bars to get any world cup business.

5am last call is disturbing, but fun. It happens during NxNE.

It would rock if I could drink a pint while watching some of my favourite soccer stars like:

Ariaga, Ariaga II, Bariaga, Aruglia and Pizozza!

I got all their autographs too when Mexico played Portugal a few years ago in Springfield.

this would be an interesting polical fight: the combined might of bar owners and drunken european/asian/south american/african soccer fans vs. mothers against drunk driving.

Hmmm ...

But aren't the games going to be broadcast at 6am or 7am? Kind of defeats the purpose ... instead of allowing people to enjoy a beverage during the World Cup matches, you will have an entire bar full of either unconscious or rowdy soccer fans.

Meh. I'll probably be watching those early morning games at home where the bar never closes and you don't need to leave a tip. :)

Well, hopefully anybody who's stupid enough to drive home from the bar after an entire night of drinking will be thwarted by the thousands of cheering fans who will inevitably pour onto the streets and render them useless for several hours.

Its a 14 hour time difference to Tokyo.

So a 3pm game there will be on at 1 am.

And don't forget....

"When the sun gets to this line - its drinking time..."

I remember when they extended last call to 2am from 1am in Ontario, it felt like a gift from God.

Yeah. According to the article, games start times are from 1:30am to 8:30am...

Maybe people will be able to drink enough to hold them over until the bars start serving again at 11am. :)

Who knows... there's still a month left to figure it out.

Game Times

All I know is that ITALY's group matches are at 6:00pm and 8:30pm local time, with the World Cup final being played at 8:00pm. So that's all that matters. ;)

Since we're on the topic of Soccer, my favourite soccer story is the following:

Sao Paulo, Brazil (Reuters):

Armed criminals trying to hold up a car at gunpoint in
Sao Paulo backed down on discovering that Pele was
sitting in the back seat, an aide to the player said.

Pele's car had stopped at traffic lights in a
prosperous neighborhood when the two would-be thieves
approached the driver, pointed a gun and told him to
open the window, his personal secretary Jose Fornos
Rodrigues said.

"When Pele took off his cap the thieves looked at him,
gave him the thumbs-up sign, apologized and walked
off," said Rodrigues, speaking by telephone from
Santos.

You know Pele is bigger then God in Brazil when........

I just hope that any club that has a TV can throw on a World Cup game, and have their drinking hours extended by 3 hours.

But I think that would be wishful thinking.

it depends what County you're in... Erie County (Buffalo area) is 4am, and New York City is 4am, but majority of other counties are either 2am or 3am (like Niagara Falls). God I love 3:55am last call...... but it makes work the next morning all the more worse sometimes
