MAPLE LEAFS OBTAIN GOALTENDER FROM HURRICANESPat Quinn, general manager and head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday
that the club has acquired goaltender Tom Barrasso from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for the Maple Leafs' fourth-round pick
in the 2003 Entry Draft.

Barrasso, 36, is playing in his 18th season in the National Hockey League and first with Carolina. In 34 games this season with the
Hurricanes he posted 13 wins, 12 losses, five ties, a 2.61 goals against average, a .906 save percentage and two shutouts. Among
active NHL goalies he is fifth in shutouts (37) and third in wins (366). Barrasso is the career assist leader among goaltenders
all-time with 48, and he is 11th all-time in wins.

The native of Boston, Massachusetts was a member of two Stanley Cup-winning teams in Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992. The former Sabre,
Penguin, Senator, and Hurricane is the leader among American-born goaltenders in wins, games played and is second in shutouts
(Frank Brimsek, 40). He holds the NHL playoff record for the longest winning streak (14), winning the last 11 games of the 1992
playoffs and the first three in 1993. He became the fourth player to capture the Vezina Trophy and the Calder
Trophy in one season (1983-84) and he made the jump from U.S. high school (Acton-Boxboro High School, Mass.) to the NHL as
Buffalo's first pick, fifth overall, in the 1983 Entry Draft.

In addition to the Vezina Trophy and Calder Trophy in 1983-84, Barrasso was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team (1984), the First
All-Star Team (1984), the Second All-Star Team (1985, 1993) and he shared the William Jennings Trophy with Bob Sauve (1985).

well, you knew that was going to happen as soon as the 'canes got weekes.

but i don't get it. schwab is playing well and joseph will be back fairly soon. is this just some first round insurance?

well, i hope they keep starting schwab while he is hot. but we can definitely use barasso in the playoffs if cujo is not ready.

also.. are we looking to keep cujo next year? is he even worth 9 million dollars? i would say no. he hasn't won anything and if anything the last few days have proved that with a solid defense we could get a goaltender in the 4-5 million range that will do the job. cujo is going to have to bite the bullet or leave. our money is better spent acquiring an imposing defenceman in the off season. schwab has played his way into a backup role on any team in the nhl with his play the past few games and i for one hope he stays as backup next season.

i never thought i would say cujo should leave but i think his time may have come!

What a fucking dick. I can't believe he's a Leaf.

He better play good, cause I'm not gonna start liking him. If he sucks, I'll be even more pissed off.

WHAT THEY FUCK ARE THEY THINKING???? SCHWAB IS PLAYING AMAZING. WE DON'T NEED BARASSO THE FUCKUP!

obviously if a team would trade a goalie like barasso for a 2004 draft pick he isn't worth very much. why do the leafs think he'll be worth any more to us?

perfect veteran backup with successful playoff experience. I think this is a good move. He'll definitely back up Scwabb.

Maybe the Leafs picking up Barasso is a sign of things to come in off-season. Joseph will want at least $8-9 million a season, which he does not deserve. He may be a good goaltender, but what has he won? The Olympics may have left a bad taste in his mouth after Quinn benched him in favour of Brodeur (a move I would have done too) as well, like I mentioned, the Leafs won't and shouldn't pay him $9 million a season.

Barasso could be the starter next year, or it could be Schwab, who knows, but getting Barasso, in my mind, is a back-up plan if and when Cujo leaves.

how far will we go this year??????

Hmmm....I didn't think they'd actually aquire him...not with Schawab on a hot streak anyways.

But it makes sense to have a veteran goaltender as backup during the playoffs...

Maybe CUJO's injury is a little more serious than we think?

could be. Remember how down-low they kept Antropov's knee injury during the playoffs 2 years ago?

okay, i'm a little calmer now since reading the news.

Since Barasso has Stanley Cup's to his name, he will definately be an asset in the playoff's.

I just hope that they aren't planning on making him the starting goalie right now, not unless Schwab starts on a downward spiral. I think schwab is playing great right now, and to replace him with another goalie would be a shot in the chin.

Now, despite what some critics are saying about Cujo lately, TORONTO NEEDS HIM! He is a great human being, a great team representative, and he still has a few good years as a goalie left in him. I really hope that Toronto doesn't think Barasso can replace him, not for a second!.

that's all.

Oh no problems with Barasso here...he's a good guy on and off the ice.

Maybe their saving CUJO for the real big games! lol....

fuck barrasso, he's an asshole on and off the ice.

anyone remember him breaking perrault's arm a couple of years ago. I have no respect for that guy and this is a stupid move by the Leafs.

And Cujo IS worth whatever he is asking. He's been the fucking team MVP every year he's been here(with the exception of this year, which i think will go to Sundin). Give the guy a break(no pun intended).

I don't care if Barrasso posts up back to back to back shutouts, he's a cunt, and I'm not gonna pretend to like him.

are you sure cujo is worth 9 *million*? think about the other players in that salary range, and the other goaltenders in that salary range..., he's been team mvp because our team gets lazy in front of our own end since they think that cujo will stop the puck anyway. they have shown in the past few days that a commitment to defence pays enormous dividends.

think about it, pay cujo 9 million bucks? or get a goaltender in the 4 or 5 million range and have extra money to improve the D? i'm with the later.

so you blame our lazy defence as the reason why Joseph is team MVP?? Thats retarded. You might as well blame all the goalies as the reason why Iginla is leading the scoring title.

And yeah, the defence has been playing well the last four games, but there's no way the Leafs can play playoff-style hockey for an entire season. Without Joseph, thats what they'll have to do to get to the playoffs.

Sure I'd like to see some big names come and help out the defence core a bit(and get rid of Corey Cross for fucks sake), but to just shit on Joseph is not fair at all. He gives his all every game, and is a fucking GREAT goalie. How quickly we forget the countless times he's kept our team in the game, and won games for us.

Are any of the big salaries really fair? Noone should get $10 million to play a sport, but thats what its like today. Believe me, he'll get what he wants and more if the Leafs don't sign him. Many teams are on the hunt for a goalie. Would you rather have Kaspiritis on defence and Barrasso in goal?? Not me mate

:)

Tom Borasso---A Toronto Maple Leaf.

as of today....

can't be a bad thing....schwab's been pretty good, granted, but I don't want to go into the play offs with just him...that would be a BAD idea.

should be interesting...I suppose he'll start next game.

what do you make of it?

its incredible how quickly times and opinions change,

the leafs could choose not to sign joseph and have him grabbed by (god forbid) the senators and then we would all end up eating a whole pile of cow
