Bank error in my favour? Collect $6,000?!?!?

So I go to take out $20 from the instabank at the start of my lunch, with today being pay day.

I look at my bank stub, and there's approximately $6000 more in there than I'm supposed to have. Probably just a glitch I'm thinking... is that a seven or a one?

All throughout lunch I'm thinking "no... this can't be true..." wondering what I'm gonna do with the money, each time telling myself that it's not really mine.

I get back to work, call my bank, and sure enough it's still there. One deposit from my employer, made late last night, instead of a one at the beginning, they seemed to have keyed in a seven.

And I'm $6,000 richer.

fuck yeah!

And although sadly, this money will probably be used to pay off debt, it still totally kicks ass.

Pete <- waiting for a call from the payroll department, trying to resist the temptation to spend it all right now.

....bring back the money to pay roll and ask for a $3000 loan.....

It's as simple as this... They made a mistake, they will notice, they will fix it.

I know so many people that have had errors like that and spend the money... eventually they needed to pay the money back.

These things ever go unnoticed... Once Payroll see's that their books dont balance, they will investigate and see the mistake.

So before you go spending the money... think of how long it would take to repay the money if they found out.

-Nickers - Being in debt an additional 6k would suck

Take the cash out, but a money order and hold the money order untill they ask for they're money back.

Don't make it easy for them, make each party admit and appologies for they're mistake.

(spending it would probably be close to fraud, holding on to it in your responsible hands after clearly irresponsible hands put it there is just common sence!!)

You'll probably get a call....

I used to work payroll and sometimes they are rushed because the money HAS to be in on time. But there are reconciliations and such that get done afterwards and at month end. Just a warning not to spend it.

Then again maybe there was no mistake and they're just finally appreciating your hard work? :)

*lol* at Boo. :)

I'll have to double-check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that my pay stub that I received yesterday showed the regular amount. Meaning that there's less chance that this shows up on the payroll radar screen.

*crosses fingers*

i was thinking the same thing:
http://www.dnai.com/~pcombs/$$tablecontents.html

if you really want to try and spend it, take it out as a money order and dont' spend it for at least a month or two. the paperwork will come around eventually, the numbers won't line up once they get the statements back from the bank.

it happened to jeff i think and the money just disappeared shortly afterwards.

Well I hope for your sake Pete that the money stays put...

I'd wait a while before spending it though...just in case.

I had read that entire story about the fake check thing a while back.

I think what I'll do is take a bit of it to pay off my credit card. And that way at least if I need to take it back out it won't be so bad, I just won't be paying the super-high interest rate while I wait for the call from payroll.

Pete <- so tempted to buy $6,000 worth of weed.

be careful with purchasing anything or paying anything off with the money. It would be a clear case of fraud. Hold the money and if they don't ask for it back in a few months then pay off the debts with it.

Don't make yourself a criminal because of someones mistake.

listen to ditto much!!!!!

i think paying your mastercard bill with the money would be fraud.

if you're getting nailed with high interest apply for a line of credit. you can apply online with TD.

putting the money in a money order would be the most aggressive thing you could consider doing.

Pete ... dump all $6,000 into PORK BELLIES. You will double your money by the time your company asks for it back!

Are you nuts AdRiaN?

Orange Juice is where it's at. The Duke's tried to corner the market on it but were foiled in their evil plans. There's money to be made now that Randolph and Mortimer are out of the picture. ;)

PETE,
DO NOT SPEND THE MONEY.

IT IS NOT YOURS. IT IS CONSIDERED FRAUD IF YOU SPEND IT.

YOU DONT WANT TO BE CHARGED WITH FRAUD!

HEED MY WORDS. I NEVER USE CAPITAL LETTERS...NEVER!

take it out
hold it
do not spend one cent of it

if they never notice it, it's yours to keep

for somereason im feeling three months to be the adequate time allowed for it to still be "their" money

after that i would start spending.

but others may disagree.

hmmm...how much does it cost to open a tim hortons?? those things make tons of cash! quiet a good investment says i.

difference in perspective makes our life so fun!
what if pete taking out the money turned out to cause bad karma in the end since it was not his money?

once again, if i was pete, i would think
that it would cause a GOOD karma if
i never spend it, and take out a check
and keep it for three month, and see what happens :)
