Teen prisoner in Edmonton courthouse custody falls down elevator shaft, dies

EDMONTON (CP) - A handcuffed 16-year-old boy in the custody of two guards died Thursday after falling about six storeys down an elevator shaft in Edmonton's courthouse.
The boy was wedged between the elevator and the shaft wall. Fire and rescue crews tried to save him but were unsuccessful, said Peter Tadman, spokesman for the Solicitor General. The boy was being escorted to a court appearance from Edmonton's young offenders centre before noon when he fell, Tadman said.
"The young person was being escorted, was standing by the doors of an elevator, the doors opened and he began falling," Tadman said.
"One of the officers reached out and tried to save him but it was unsuccessful, he was gone."
Edmonton police homicide officers were investigating the boy's death and the province has already called a fatality inquiry. Both measures are standard practice when a death occurs in a public building, Tadman said.
The two guards were questioned by police.
"They are being given some counselling. It is just a terrible tragic occurrence. They are shaken to the core," Tadman said.
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young man."
Karen Carlson of the Emergency Response Department said early indications were that the fourth-floor elevator doors opened prematurely. The teen stepped in, fell and became wedged between the elevator car and the wall.
Edmonton police spokesman Wes Bellmore stressed that homicide investigators were dispatched because the death was classified as "in custody."
"That in no way implies there's any suspicion of wrongdoing," he said.
Alberta Infrastructure spokesman Mark Cooper said the elevator was last inspected on Dec. 16 and "nothing was found out of the ordinary."
Provincial inspectors were on scene Thursday waiting for a chance to inspect the elevator.
Elevators in Alberta are inspected every second year.
