So I was on the intuit website and also the bell website and these 'friendly' pop up chat windows pop up claiming to be "live chat" where you can ask questions about their products or services.

Are real people behind the chat windows or is it automated machine support? Is it some kind of intelligent machine function drawing answers from a database? Or is it same guy named Raj in Bangalore?

It's real people. Although the first popup window asking if you want to chat isn't. Whn you start chatting a real person is talking to you.

They do rely for the most part on copy paste from scripts and knowledge base articles so it may seem like a machine but they are real people.

Yet another web feature the business community cribbed from the porn industry.

It actually is a great cost-savings for the company using it as most of the time the chat agent is engaging in multiple chats at the same time (which is part of the reason you get delayed responses).

And nobody can hear that they're from India.
