Anyone still watch CNN for Afghan updates ?

i mean... it's been a while since there's been any noteworthy activity... however, that doesn't mean the importance of the issue decreases.

do any of you still tune into CNN to see what's up ? Does anyone still care, or are people just fed up and bored with the whole topic ?

I mean, when you're on the outside looking in, things get dull rather quickly.

just wondering.

One of the more surprising news items that I've come across lately is the position of the Pentagon on civillian deaths. They've decided, after some investigating, that in a couple of botched raids where innocent civillians were either killed or detained, they didn't make any mistakes.

Somehow they can just brush off the fact that they killed innocent civillians, and that it's just a part of war and nothing went wrong. I can't find the article, but as best as I can remember, the two incidents that it mentionned were the air raid on the convoy that killed over a dozen innocent Afghanis, and the night time assault on a small community of innocent civillians. In the first case over a dozen people were murdered by U.S. bombs while on their way to the ceremony marking the new government. In the second case troops raided a village at night, murdering many civillians and imprisonning the rest until they realised that they weren't Al Queda fighters.

CNN = propaganda

get your news from a non-american source unless you want to have to decode it to remove the american propaganda influence.

CNN is now spitting out this utter gruel about how Syria and Iraq are interweaved with Palestinian terrorism, saying how terrorism against Isreal will not stop unless these sources are taken out as well.

Such bullshit trying to gain support for their inevitable raid of the middle east they keep foreshadowing.

I was just thinking the same thing: its all about the middle east now. There has not been any coverage of afganistan in a week.

I am thinking its going to get even more crazy in the next little while, becoming a much broader regional conflict.

Isn't it great to be living in Canada.

you're a little inaccurate here.

CNN = News from an American point of view, because its an American news channel. I'd hardly call that propaganda.

Also, if you blindly listen to every word someone says, then you're probably not intelligent enough to watch the news anyways, and should stick to more mundane activities like basket-weaving. Most people don't need to seek out alternative media to separate the crap from the news, they can figure it out for themselves..........

CNN's actual reporting and coverage is excellent. Its their talk shows and political POV shows that are biased, but who actually sits through these anyways?

propaganda

n : information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause
*********************

i'll agree with part of your argument looped, I was taking an extremist stance because of the nature and quantity of what they cover in their reports.

The news items that CNN chooses to cover are certainly news worthy, and also subject to a pro-US bias. However, the items that do not receive attention from that network are often equally worthy of attention, and this turning of public focus away from important or controversial issues could be construed as propagandistic in nature as well.

While it isn't one of their *stated* objectives, CNN is responsible for shaping how Americans and much of the Western world view the issues. Being an American network, they are promoting *their* cause and agenda. Therefore they qualify under this definition of propaganda.

All news media, all literature, *everything* is subject to bias, both by the author and by the audience.
By all means be selective in what you choose to hear and what you choose to ignore, I was simply stating that the usual level of bias in news reporting appears (to me) to be higher and more pervasive on CNN, especially during times of conflict.

The BBC is my favorite source for international news.

better than CNN, but I'll still watch CNN throughout the day.

You are absolutely correct. However, the same could be said of all news agencies around the world - if the viewer chooses to follow blindly anything and everything they read, then their bias is due to a lack of judgement and/or intelligence, and their POV doesn't really count anyways. I bet you the news agencies in Israel are pretty pro-Israel; same with Palestine's, same with everywhere. A country doesn't like to dwell on its shortcomings, and always gives the news as it pertains to their country.

Though I will agree with you, CNN waves the flag a little much at times, but there's always the channel changer to BBC.

Media is all bullshit, you have to filter it finely to get the actual pertinent information. But the filtering isn't too difficult..........

Well seeing as how the Taliban government isn't in any postion right now to release death tolls because they've been toppled and have lost any sense of centralized command I don't see where you're going with this.

However Al Jazeera the news network that is broadcast in (but not from) Afghanistan is an excellent news source. It really puts CNN to shame in terms of scope of coverage but it is in no way affiliated with the Taliban. No matter what the US tends to imply.
