All Up In Ya Ass, Vista - It's Windows 7!

it runs the same as vista. its vista. it just has a few different features and a new taskbar.

...so yes.

though i dont understand how they did something right 'for once' yet you seem to like XP which, believe it or not was ALSO made by microsoft! WOWZERS eh?

They didn't just re-release Vista. It sounds like they plugged a ton of memory leaks and made the whole thing run a lot more efficiently. I doubt very highly that any of the Vista releases would play nice with a netbook.

Aesthetically, the interface is pretty much the same as Vista but the general consensus seems to be that Aero Glass was the ONLY thing that was good about Vista anyways, so it makes sense to port over that feature.

nope. i had vista on my netbook (1gb ram). it ran better than XP (doccumented to perform better) and Win7 Doesnt run particularly better than Vista did on it aside from slightly better battery time etc. its better but not too noticably so in terms of memory use or horsepower.

It's the Vista core, same thing. If Windows 7 runs well one something, Vista should have run just as well on it, unless it's a driver issue that's newer in Windows 7.

Also I haven't noticed any of the 'draconian DRM' issues in W7 that I've heard plagued Vista.

The DRM is exactly the same.

I installed this today. I had to update my BIOS so that it would work with my nvidia video card but otherwise it went smoothly.

Build 7077

ok, seeing as i know very little about the details of all of this, but do need a 64 system... but really cannot risk fucking up my system again for something like this... would getting the 7077 version and installing be a good choice, considering the overall improvements?

No you don't need a 64 bit system unless you want to run the 64 bit version of the o/s.

Lobo

that's the thing - i do want a 64 bit system. i would like to use 8g of ram but am currently limited to 4 with my 32 xp os.

so why are you even considering it? This is a beta operating system.

because:

1. i have windows7 64 as we speak and do not have vista
2. when the issue of os' came up during a diff thread i had posted a lil while back, the consensus was that it was worth trying windows7 instead of vista.

Word, whats wrong with Vista 64?

i had heard *some* bad things about working with some audio apps and vista, but i really am not sure.

i figured that, hey, windows7 has gone through a lot of iterations now, and - if rumour is to be believed - is about as stable as you could ever hope and very likely the closest thing to the true release. and i do have version 7077, but i thought i'd ask here first for some thoughts.

i've been running this all week now. no issues. i just had to update the firmware on my dvd rom drive in order to get it to brun dvd's but otherwise things have been super smooth and very pleasant. i had to install powerISO in order to mount an ISO because daemon tools won't install. it's the only app I haven't been able to install. i've installed office, acdsee, adobe cs3 and a few other things.

one of my favourite new features is how status bars (when copying/moving large files for example) get displayed as part of the task bar icons now.

Rumor is RC1 became available on MSDN this morning. I don't have my account for MSDN anymore since I changed job roles, anyone with a working one want to confirm?

Well I haven't had a problem with it on my netbook so I may just use my existing build in perpetuity. Why mess with success, amirite?

Honestly though, I am so screwed going back to XP now. Between that and not being able to use Google Chrome at work, it feels like the dark ages up in this.

Anyone upgraded to 7100 yet?
I plan on doing it overnight tonight due to it taking 6 fucking years for the last in place upgrade. Hopefully this one goes quicker!

i was just installing xp this week and i was thinking to myself how ridiculous it is that i'm using such an old OS. i never tried vista, but i'd love to see if they put out a good product this time around.
