i'm going to be seeing akufen the week early here in detroit at a paxahau party, so i'm praying to god that he doesn't play the same set twice.

then again...even if he does, it won't necissarily be a bad time.

his movement set this year was different (as far as akufen can be..) than when I caught him at advant mutek in toronto.

his sound had matured.

yeah, he doesn't really do the radio chop up stuff anymore. he was super deep and kinda dark at the demf, but who knows. a few of his remixes recently have been more like his old style than anything new he's done.

but like i said, i just hope its not the same thing twice.

Please let this be true. I find a lot of his stuff on "My Way" too disjointed and jangly sounding.

well, i'll see him this weekend, then i'll let everyone know how he played, and then you can all decide on if its worth venturing out to the wabi party or not.

i, honestly, think he'll play a lot deeper at wabi than he will in detroit, mainly because the deeper dubby stuff seems to be more of the wabi style, and he'll hear the openers and drop some sick ass shit on the crowd.

ableton live demo..

by the way, we are still providing the ableton live demo at 9pm..
although it isnt Robert himself but we made sure someone appointed by ableton/midiman will be present to share the incredible capabilities of this piece of performance software..

dtox, judy and I saw someone using Ableton live to MIX tracks with a couple weeks ago....

they were using wav files and blending them like they would a loop for a track.....

(but not just techno tracks: BDP, Patrick Cowley, soul...)

some of the mixes turned out alright

but just like final scratch and traktor -- if you can't dj before, you can't dj with more technology....

Akufen at Movement was pretty cool - but Fehlmann was far better IMHO.

Totally looking forward to the wabi party and hoping that Akufen drops some newer stuff - I loved that Hawaiian wodka party 12''

ok...so akufen in detroit tonight...

meh...not that impressive. i've heard a lot lot better.

very deep, quite housey, and not a lot of glitch and click. it will definitely go over well at the wabi party, don't worry about that. again, he played a few songs absolutely verbatim off of his ep's and lp's, and that seriously pisses me off. there's no real "live" to that.

his lapstop had some major ram buffer issues, as it was actually skipping. i think he loads way too much shit in to his ableton, 'cause it was skipping and dropping out a lot.

long story short...

crackhaus was way way way way better, and akufen was pretty boring, in my opinion.

it still had me shaking my ass, but i'd much rather crackhaus didn't stop playing.

^to the above two posts...

Fehlman was leaps and bounds ahead of Akufen....

but comparing years of experience and hardware (orb) to one LP and ableton (akufen) is like comparing apples and oranges. :)

I've always been impressed by crackhaus. they gots more funk in the junk...

the track crackhaus did on that force inc comp I loved...but when I heard the Lp I didn't bother buying it, to samey all the way through it for me.

Like element said, Akufen's set in Detroit was REALLY deep, the deepest I've heard him play. There were lots of lush chords and piano samples, and then a disco house track came out of nowhere.

It's hard to say if he'll play similar this Friday. A lot of artists have a habit of playing different in Detroit than they do everywhere else (although usually it's harder).

I think some of our boredom came from being exhausted after a huge dinner and dancing through two previous sets as well.

But I'm still looking forward to hearing him this Friday, although jesuschrist I hope he works out those laptop/ableton issues.

final update..

0213 - wabi 5 year anniversary

we never pictured it way back when on a cold kensington market night in
february 1999 but here we are, pleased to be inviting you to help us
celebrate five years of doing what we do. if you've been to one of our
events in the past we thank you and hope to see you friday night. if
you've never been before and if you can only go to one of our nights
this year then this friday is the one. oh and by the way, we do have
someone by the name of akufen to rock the party right.

having gained worldwide acclaim following the release of his album 'my
way' on force inc., montreal's akufen (marc leclair) has gone on to
release dozens of innovative tracks on labels such as perlon, trapez
and oral and remix such artists as massive attack, cabaret voltaire and
luomo. catch marc playing live as he makes a very rare toronto
appearance at our anniversary party and treats us to some brand new
unreleased material.

friday february 13th.. 9pm.. surface.. 12 brant st.
$12 advance + before 11pm.. more after.. 19+

akufen > live [force inc. trapez. perlon. mutek.. montreal]

other exciting things on friday:
- we will be unveiling our limited edition wabi t-shirts - we've got
one in your size!
- there will be a very limited number of the last of our 4 year
compilation CD's for sale.
- surface will have a brand new 15,000 watt sound system. that's a lot
of watts.
- and don't forget the ableton live demonstration at 9pm. the demo
obviously won't be by monolake anymore but it will be conducted by an
ableton-appointed specialist.

See you all there.... :) I am looking forward to hearing Akufen...
excellent replacement for Monolake (though he's also brilliant)! those guys were both good at mutek.

rumour has it that the reason akufen's laptop was such a pile of shit last weekend in detroit was that someone spilled a beer on it.

hopefully its dried out and fully functional.
