April 12, 2002... Director Stephen Norrington (Blade) will write and direct a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga Akira. The manga was adapted once as an animated movie released in 1988. The new version of Akira will be produced by Jon Peters (Batman).
Because studio execs look upon "new and original" and equate it with "high risk financial investment". Exec's are businessment, not artists, which is part of the reason why hollywood puts out so much shit in a year.
That's why I always try to hit the Midnight Madness stuff at the Short Film Festival for a creative fix. It's pure gold. Action, blood, gore, great camera work and writing, sex and Korean schoolgirls doing autopsies.
