Has anyone else seen this film?
I'd have to say it is one of my favourite of all time
It's purely brillant
But no one I talk to has ever seen it
Or even heard about

What a great film! I'm glad I caught it in the theatre. I highly recommend it to everyone.

The basic premise is that there is a sort of purgatory where you go to after you die and you are there supposed to pick one memory from your life that will be recreated for you on film. Then, when you watch the memory re-enactment you will live forever in that moment.

The story revolves around a group of people who have to choose their moments, as well as the staff at the institution who are there to enable it.

Great characters, acting etc, and it really makes you look at your own life and experiences in a different way after seeing it.

Yes!

I've seen this movie a couple times and have recommended it.

As BBB mentioned, it does make you rethink your life experiences. I'm still wondering as to which memory I'd like to pick to live for the rest of my afterlife. It's quite hard to pick

It's a very long and quiet film, but it suits its purposes perfectly. I still don't quite understand when the girl, forget her name, goes to the city to take pictures. I mean...is she a ghost and she's travelled the living world? Or does she go to the city in the afterlife and take pictures? Cuz, if you think about it; the dead can only pick one memory to live their afterlife and thus having a whole city in the afterlife seems out of context.

Anyway, it's one of my faves!

Has anyone seen that Robin Williams flick with Cuba Gooding Jr, where everything is a painting and it mushes all together? It's about the afterlife too.

so many kore-eda fans!!

bigbadbaldy and/or jus me - have you either of you seen Maboroshi?? It is another film by Kore-eda and a bit less "poppy" than After Life, for lack of a better word. It is even slower than After Life, but very emotional and thought provoking.

Ok.....Maboroshi....hmm....well, I always hate trying to describe movies but here we go, wish me luck:

It is about this woman, from Tokyo, whose first love is killed on the way home from work one day. She does not have a job of her own and so a match maker sets her up with a guy from a small fishing village.

It is a really really beautiful film, and if you enjoyed the long cinematic style shots and clever use of architecture in After Life you will REALLY enjoy Maboroshi. Kore-eda pays less attention to cinematic norms in Maboroshi...for example, he goes like minutes at a time without any dialogue or change in shot.

say, didn't you also post in my j-pop thread a while back?? you like japanese films too?? have you seen any other films by japanese directors?? I am trying to find a copy of Audition (apparently the scaries movie EVER) and The Ring...but so far to no avail...but since I am moving back to Japan on Friday, not a big deal ;) haha

After sayin that aloud, "maroboshi", sounds like malboro.

If I were to pick it up, it would proabably be at a smaller store right? I think so.

Yea, that was me in the jpop thread. :p Good memory! I haven't been keeping up lately. ICQ me and keep me up to date!

Lots of the jap films you have to order, I guess. There's always been a shortage here unless it gets raves reviews.

hahaha

yea Maboroshi does sound like marlboro..I guess ;) haha It means illusion, which kinda gives you a taste for what to expect in the movie.

I just requested your icq authorization, so I will keep you up to date if you get in touch :) Just think, you could be the coolest girl in Canada!!! Have you ever heard of Eastern Youth?!?! Apparently they are like the "Japanese Sonic Youth", I dunno..I want to check them out...

I actually have never had to order any of my films....good connections at my university, good location etc etc etc.. :) lucky me!!

Disco Stu> It will be tough to find it on DVD I think, unless you order it specifically. The first thing working against you is that the movie is quite old. The second thing is that VHS tapes in Japan are compatable with North American VHS tapes, so often Japanese movie distributors don't even bother with DVDs...and if they do, they are limited run. You will probably have to order it specifically from a store.....OR! talk to Highsteppa the movie guru...he seems to be the man with the plan. If you are interested in checking out any other Japanese movies shoot me a pm!
