Advantages the button fly?

Answer: None.

I honestly don't see any reason as to why it is still in use. A zipper is much more efficient. Especially for doing up the pants. Some may say it is the safety factor (for men anyways), but I just don't buy that. Others may feel it is a reliability issue as buttons will fail far less often than a zipper. But I ask, how often has the zipper on your pants ever failed you? Probably never.

I just find it takes you an extra minute to re-do up your pants everytime you have to go to the bathroom. And when you are a guy at a urinal spending that much time with your hands manipulating that area, it looks like you are trying to pleasure yourself in public.

Can anyone convince me of some good reasons as to why the button-fly is superior to the zipper?

Cheers ... Ian :)

I never get it caught in zippers either.

So maybe the button-fly is really a "zipper for the clumsy"?

i have a pair on right now and the middle button just fell off but the rest of the buttons are still there so the pants are still functional

i guess this is an advantage

I was thinking of this myself, but the only reason that has most likely happened is from you pulling the pants apart and stressing the buttons, eventually leading to one of them becoming damaged. Had you not had buttons at all, this situation would not have occured.

ew. I hated the button jeans...especially when the front flap was left open so you could see them all.

BTW, I am an idiot and missed the word "of" in the title of this thread. I am so ashamed of myself. I wish I could edit it.

There is nothing worse than wearing a button fly during a night of heavy drinking. The drunker you get, the harder it is to do up the fly, which in turn cuts into your drinking time! It's just counter-productive.

But if you cut off the cover infront of the buttons and fray the edges a little, you can look like Marky Mark. You cant do that with a zipper.

Again, since most of the bottons and flys are covered up, the fashion argument is pointless.

But I agree, I won't pass up a pair of pants just because of the button fly, BUT I do let out a silent "uhhhh" when I try them on and notice the lack of zipper.

My take is that it's less likely that you forget to do up your pants with the button fly. See, with an ordinary fly, when you finish your business, you will do the top button and then pull the zipper, but sometimes there is a chance that you may forget the zipper part. If this has never happened to you, then you are truly a god among men.

However, with the button fly, you have to do the bottom button first, and gradually work your way to the top. By doing this, you'll never have your fly open! It's quite methodical actually.

Well do you design pants? No. So it is pointless. ;) j/k

Bottom line is, I am sure most people don't care about this subject, I am just reminded of it everytime I go to the bathroom and am wearing a pair of button-fly pants.

I have an ex bf who will buy only button fly pants. Supposedly they're more comfortable, according to him.

*shrug*

I, on the other am a creature of convenience.

I agree. I wore my new buttonflies to the club on Saturday and was forced to use the stall. I just could not get them undone and it looked like I was totally fumbling at the urinal.

I had a pair of pants where the zipper just would not stay up. i finally just ended up looping an elastic through the zipper and over the button. if they had been button fly I would not have had this problem.

but i don't prefer one over the other normally.
