the writing's on the wall

but I need to know what it is EXACTLY::

The writing IS on the wall

Or neither of these and you can help me out by typing it out EXACTLY how it is written

they're both correct.

'Tis true - the only difference between them is the contraction of the verb is.

Comes from the Bible story about the fall of the Tower of Babel in the old testament, when the prince was forewarned by the writing of the message by a disembodied hand on a palace wall during a feast.

If the saying originated in biblical times would that not predate the common use of contractions in the English language? If it comes from the Tower of Babel myth, the original saying was probably a version of Mesopotamian??..
Now that could really mess me up! :p

Cool..( I love to find out where common sayings originated:) )
