I realize this is an open-ended question but-

Looking for recommendations on a lens. Today I saw an 18-200mm lens from Canon, $780. Seems like a steep price to pay for me, someone whose photography is basic, at best. Perhaps it would be a good step into the hobby? I saw some used on craigs for $650 though so that's a better price. Can someone recommend a good starting point for a lens, for a canon (old rebel digital SLR)? The benefit of this lens was the guy said it had image stabilization + 2 lenses in one really, for one price. The current 18-55mm lens I have is busted, so I need a new one.

^^^ seems like a lot of cleanup still required until the olympic village is ready.

I personally wouldn't bother with the 28-200 lens as it's reach is far too long and it's pretty expensive for the quality of glass in it. If you want a lens with that kind of scope, go with the Sigma or Tamron instead. The sigma retails for around $450. Tamron is $600, and both are actually 18-200 unlike the Canon. Realistically, the 28-200 yields iffy pics below 50mm. It's rather sharp in the 135-200 range though. It has a horrible tendancy to produce pictures with purple fringing (Chromatic Aberation). The AF is real bad and hunts for correct focus more often than not.

What kind of shooting do you want to do anyhow? That would help in suggesting alternatives.
