In Canada an Iphone 5s 16GB with no contract is $729.95. Not sure how the above prices are insane unless you think Iphone pricing in general is insane.

Well people don't generally buy phones without contract. 24 month contracted prices were announced starting at $199 (US). That should translate to $229.95 for Canadian Carriers.
