5-HTP

I seem to have misplaced my jar of these wonderful pills so I'll need to pick some of this up. A little while ago I heard they were being pulled off the shelf or something? Is this true? Does anyone know of a store downtown where I can pick these babies up?

I can't help you out, but I have heard of 5-HTP before. What's up with it? I can't remember what it's used for.

5-hydroxytryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter involved in just about everything...

5-htp is not being pulled, and you can find it at most health food stores.

Yes they most definitely do!

The brand you should be looking for is Natrol they're the same people who own Prolab products, and if you know your sport nutrition you know they have superior quality. There 5-htp is the best on the Canadian market, in my opinion.

NOW nutrition brand is very good...

And for fuck's sake, don't go to GNC... they charge WAAAY too much for anything...

Little place in Kensington Market called Tuttu Frutti sells it for 60 X 50mg capsules for around $12, whereas at GNC you'll pay at least twice that.

You can get 5htp in health food stores...

there is one near Yonge and Isabella... I get them every time after doing pillz.... they rock. Nothing like doing pillz, and not being cracked afterwards... you bounce back to normal in no time.

Actually... if you really want to do it right... your body can absorb 100mg of 5HTP every 12 hours... and it gets absorbed better if you take Vitamin B6... so get some time release tablets of that aswell.

-Nick - I've done so many drugs in my life it's a discusting... Thank god I'm a straigh edge now

Not quite technically correct... vitamin b6 is needed to convert it to serotonin, and it has nothing to do with absorption.

Don't have time to read the thread, but whatever you do don't buy it at GNC (or anything from there). Their 5-HTP is up to twice as expensive as at other stores.

Hey postmod, would you happen to have any references for studies on 5-HTP? I can't find any real research anywhere (then again I haven't been looking that hard).

I'm starting to wonder if 5-HTP can really have any effect other than placebo. Most people get more than enough tryptophan in their diet and tryptophan to 5-HTP conversion is generally no problem... so the real limiting factor for seretonin production is the vitamin B6 dependent enzyme that converts 5-HTP to 5-HT. If that's the case, then shouldn't taking vitamin B6 be more effective than taking 5-HTP? Or perhaps taking 5-HTP and B6 at the same time could be a good combo?

And finally, since taking 5-HTP directly goes around the tryptophan -> 5-HTP pathway, isn't there a danger of this pathway being weakened by lack of use (i.e. atrophy -- which could lead to dependency on 5-HTP supplements).

Hmmmmm....

Like Postmod said, NOW Brand 5-HTP is really good.

If you want cheap prices, go to http://www.discountnaturalvitamins.com/

and get the NOW Brand 120 caps of 100 mg 5-HTP. That's a good deal. Those caps have 2x as much 5-HTP as most caps on the market (usually 50 mg).

Its a store in the US, but still comes out cheaper than anything I found here.

Supplements Plus on Church St. between Carlton and Wellesley has 20% off everything on the first Tuesday of each month.

The 5-HTP also comes in the smaller capsules (still 50mg of active ingredient, just less filler) ... which I find easier on the stomach if you happen to be taking a bunch at once.

Pill wussie!

I can swallow 10 REGULAR sized caps in one gulp, sometimes more. It's all about opening up the throat and letting in all the goodness..
