Hey postmod, would you happen to have any references for studies on 5-HTP? I can't find any real research anywhere (then again I haven't been looking that hard).
I'm starting to wonder if 5-HTP can really have any effect other than placebo. Most people get more than enough tryptophan in their diet and tryptophan to 5-HTP conversion is generally no problem... so the real limiting factor for seretonin production is the vitamin B6 dependent enzyme that converts 5-HTP to 5-HT. If that's the case, then shouldn't taking vitamin B6 be more effective than taking 5-HTP? Or perhaps taking 5-HTP and B6 at the same time could be a good combo?
And finally, since taking 5-HTP directly goes around the tryptophan -> 5-HTP pathway, isn't there a danger of this pathway being weakened by lack of use (i.e. atrophy -- which could lead to dependency on 5-HTP supplements).
Hmmmmm....
