MAYA is king if you are into big budget production, high-detail character animation, and have A LOT of rendering stations and TIME....LOTS.
For everything else, Electric Image is fantastical. Superb quality, descent interface(s), and bloody fast rendering.

Oops, just for text....My recommendations are a bit overkill in that case. Maybe Bryce? Its super easy to use.
