2014 - Year In Review

2014 was my first year of fatherhood. Our daughter, Aixia, was just 11 days old when the year started, so this was a year of many firsts. Her first time recognizing me, her first giggle, her first laugh, her first crawl, her first “Ba Ba”, her first time standing up … you get the idea. This was the year of getting to know the new little person in our lives, and that’s made it the best year ever.

Other stuff that happened in 2014:

  • There were huge changes at work. My company, which is a portfolio for a U.S. private equity firm, sold 75% of its corporate assets, reducing our total company size from 1,200 employees to 300. This included a sale of several companies, a partially-contested buyout of 75% of our shareholders, a new financing and a corporate reorganization as our new company gets ready to grow out a second platform of businesses which we will sell in 1 – 3 years. At that time, the remaining shareholders (myself included) will cash out, and I will have to start looking for my next gig. This has been the best and most lucrative job of my life, but I know that it will be coming to an end in 1 – 3 years (as is the nature of private equity portfolio companies), and the thought of looking for a new job is scary.

  • We did a bit of travelling: Hong Kong twice, Indonesia, Arizona, San Francisco twice for work, Jamaica with an amazing crew for a friend’s wedding, snowboarding trips to Kicking Horse, Banff, Fernie and Vermont (Stowe). We ended the year in Hong Kong, for new year’s and my brother-in-law’s wedding.

  • This was our first full year of house (as opposed to condo) ownership, and I never thought I would miss paying condo fees so much. Owning a house also meant big family gatherings and pool parties. We cooked more than our share of turkeys and rib roasts, and I now buy wine by the case.

  • My two nieces – Alexandra (age 20) and Emily (age 17) – started “raving”. They started with mainstream events like Digital Dreams, Veld, Armin Van Buuren and Aviicii. I brought my older niece to Andy C and some other events. They are now both hooked. The older niece bugs me to bring her whenever I go out and she constantly asks me about music and oldschool raves.

  • Some great friends got married this year: Chrome & Julia, Koko & Heather, Peej & Alicia, Jelo & Katrina. Gave a best man’s speech at Jelo’s wedding, for which I was very nervous but I think it turned out alright.

  • Lots of new kids on the horizon for our circle of friends. Bort & Geraldine had baby Isla, Jelo & Katrina are expecting any day now, Jesse & Samantha, Spinz & Angeline … this all bodes well for future group trips with kids. :)

  • Olivia Chow’s book came out. Chapter 10, on working with youth, contained a lengthy recounting of the iDance Rally which was a nice treat to read. I wrote a community letter thanking Olivia for her support of the electronic music scene. This task resulted in arguments and accusations from some folks, and brought me back to some of the ridiculous politrix that existed backinthaday.

  • We bought a new car, but don’t get delivery until March. Until then, I am driving a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire that we found online for $500. It is puke green, and has a “University of Guelph” sticker on the rear window, but it drives very nicely and makes a great winter beater. I will give it to my niece when the winter is over.

  • Favourite movies of the year were Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Interstellar. Favourite TV shows were Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and The Newsroom. Favourite comics were Invincible, The Walking Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy (Bendis’ writing on this is his best since Ultimate Spider-Man) and Hawkeye.

That’s about it. We can’t wait to see what 2015 will bring. :)

Awesome year for me. Best decision I ever made was to live internationally. Tribe for me is now a nice affirmation that I don't miss Toronto. I miss some of you guys, though.

Travelled through Europe and the Mediterranean, upgraded my education, and took more photos. Overall, I've never felt more free. Looking forward to the next year, too.

Mongolia's pretty fucking awesome and surreal.

I am trying to picture the Klubmasta driving a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire and it is not happening.... Post pics Will!

I find this a hopeful example that the younger generation will have an interest in the history and roots of electronic music and DJ culture and that, like many of us, musical palettes mature away from commercial pop into more substantial genres we can make our own.

Boss Hog, Mongolia!? do you have a webpage or something with photos of your travels?

I love this thread so much love and insightful thought in review.
Was going to write a lengthy review then realized there way too much info about myself.

Got married in Key Largo, i'm moving to the Michigan aka the state permanently stuck in 1973-76. Been having to answer alot of the same questions all the time and say way too many goodbyes.
Visited OBX - North Carolina which prides itself on BBQ and Seafood.. why have I not heard or realized this sooner?
The Electric Forest festival was amazing, everyone should try and go at least once if they are into that sort of thing.
Played at Harvest and had as always the time of my life. God I love that place.. Too
Can't wait to get back up to the Malia's Forest next summer. Hopefully less mosquitoes and rain on the last day.

About to get on wagon to train for wedding celebration #2 next summer.

- Crowdfunded about 70% of my 200-hour yoga teacher training, which I completed last month at Octopus Garden. I've been teaching more and more privates, with many students coming from in and around our neighbourhood. This has always been my goal, to provide a community healing hub. A teacher for whom I have much respect has been calling on me as a regular sub for her group classes, which feels great and bodes well for future opportunities.

- The missus and I completed our first backcountry camping trip this summer. Mind you, we went to the Massasauga, which is rather Hilton-esque relative to other spots in the province, but we learned a lot in the 4 nights we were there and had an awesomely quiet and technology-free (GPS aside ;) ) time away from it all.

- Marked 5 years as a certified shiatsu therapist. Was put in charge of the kitchen at our annual summer retreat and delivered 3 days of kickass, vegetarian meals. This year, we used Hart House Farm up in Caledon, and instead of our usual sweat lodge on the last night, we used the site's sauna, built by visiting Finnish students in the 1950s.

- Scored some awesome records, held several fun and therapeutic jams with friends in the basement, made extra effort to spend some time on the other side of the booth and got back in touch with my love for spontaneous movement.

No huge *WOW!!* moments, just a smooth and pleasant sail through '14.

Sorry, what am I missing? I used them both for the exact same purpose. Didn't know there was something beyond that.

Ooo, I missed this thread -they're fun :)

* After 2.25 years of working on a restoration project vehicle (1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5 -2nd gen with a 22RE), it's FINALLY on the road. Accidentally tripled the budget, but whatever, it's running and it's awesome. 4WD and studded winter tires are the cat's meow.
* Sold my Honda Accord v6 6spd to a friend for a sweet price -he's young, getting married, lives with his parents and wants to move out so I sold him the car for 40% off private sale value or 25% off what I was offered on a trade-in. That felt nice to help a good guy out.
* Bought a car that I've been eye balling since 2006 -I bought a 2011 subaru STi with 30K kms on it. Super fun car. 300hp and AWD. Can't go wrong.
* The biggest highlight has to be getting married. My favourite cousin in the whole wide world came up from San Diego for my wedding! I haven't seen her since 1998 when I lived with her for a handful of months. I was fortunate enough that some awesome friends came from Munich, Australia, and Prague (props to Skin Deep). It was an awesome, awesome experience. Married the woman I love but it was pretty much a massive party with everyone I want in my life. All 200 of them haha
* Ooo, I finally made a decision to cut my brother out of my life. Very toxic. My parents are pretty much disowning me for it, but hey, can't win em all. I was never really close to my family in the first place; such is life, I suppose. I am very at peace with everything which is awesome.
* Got to race a couple of rounds of motorcycles. I couldn't race too close to the wedding in case I injured myself.
* Took about 6 weeks off this year. Thankful to have a job that allows me to do that while affording my stupid spending habits.

I had the most fucking insane amount of international travel. It was awesome, tiring and I have some awesome memories.

I finally went back to Dubai after 6 years and met my best friend who is married with a little girl.

Flew off to Bangkok caught an early flight to Koh Samui, where my mind was blown away. What an island of beauty.

I attended a luxury dream wedding at a 5 star resort and witnessed my cousin get married. I bawled like little baby.

I visited Dhaka for the first time, I was astounded by their marvelous art scene.

I flew back to Thailand, visited a lovely island called Koh Tao. Totally went out of my comfort zone and got my scuba diving license. The instructor was a totally dick towards me, but in the end I overcame my fear.

I experienced the beautiful world of the ocean. We easily forget what wonder is below. It almost made me want to stop eating sushi.

I did about 9 dives including a night dive within 4 days and fucked up my ear. I wasn't allowed to dive again, I was also stuck on a cheesy party island, where horny tourists roamed like the walking dead.

I had the most terrible nightmare, soon after I discovered the island used to be a political prisoner island. Thailand is a beautiful country, but the people are very hurt and angry. Sad. Tourists are at fault too.

I reunited with another best friend who overcame cancer and flew to Bali. He flew from Australia over Easter weekend. We had a tiresome week driving from place to place. Indonesia is so beautiful. The people are awesome.

I stayed one day in Singapore and learned so much about a city. I met family I hadn't seen in many years.

Flew to see my grandparents, went back to Dubai then to Toronto.

Enjoyed summer, went to Eclipse festival, had a blast.

Got to spend time at a cottage, despite it being cold, I went swimming, because F U.

I did have some downs this year, some fucker scratched my car and it cost me $1200 to fix it. That really fucking sucked. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with people.

I ended up being flown to Dubai for work in November, had a good time.

Within two weeks after that, I left for NYC, went to Milan for 8 hours. I got to see the Marc Chagall exhibition, it was beautifully exhibited.

I went to a new country, completely blind and ignorant about it.
I visited Budapest, I tried couchsurfing and I met the most coolest people on the planet.

I truly fell in love with this city. It's completely underrated and more people should go visit it.

I am back in Dubai, currently, I missed my best friend's wedding due to visa issues, now I am about to go out again, before I head back to Toronto.

A lot of people have asked me if I'm moving back to Dubai. Who knows what will happen. I'm going to make Toronto work. I really want to move to Berlin.

I am working towards my goal to move aboard. My deadline is 35 yrs old, because that's when I can no longer get working visas.

Starting the new year, fresh. I have to re-learn playing the game again. It's been a while, so it will be quite the challenge.

I'm not sure if I will be doing anymore international travel.

This year is going be hardwork, esp if I want to be able to move aboard.

Mod One - you should sign up with Food.ee They just launched in Toronto. A friend is the ceo if you need a word. Peko has my email.

Currently I have orderit, justeat and sohungry and they are bringing me a lot of orders. We also take our own calls and I have my own drivers as well. Delivery has brought up my profits by at least 25%.

Food.ee markets themselves (and partners with) mainly corporate clients so that they are their food provider much like a caterer, except from more 'exclusive' ( I suppose) restaurants that typically wouldn't partner with a delivery service.

So their bread and butter is providing corporate clients with menu options that are perfectly organized and labeled (based on dietary preference/allergy, etc) on a regular basis. So as an example many wealth management or law firms order both lunch and dinner, daily, and Food.ee has contracts with many of them. On the restaurant side of things, it's more lucrative than a single small order using something like Orderit. And Food.ee tries to partner with emerging, quality restaurants versus just the Thai place down the street so that they are providing something to their corporate clients they wouldn't otherwise be able to arrange. So as an example they might pursue Playa Cabana but turn down Coco Rice.

Beer babe you wouldn't have been able to use them for just a small order. Did you use them at work?

Well I did contact them and it seems that my restaurant is out of their zone... so unfortunate.
