recordable media prices in canada to go up

In 2003 a new law will be introduced in Canada on all recordable media , increasing prices.

$0.59 to $1.23 will be tacked onto burnable CD's and minidiscs, $2.27 on DVD-R's, and $21 per gigabyte of storage on portable mp3 players.

The money obtained from the extra cost is going to be given to the recording industry.

The proposed changes can be read here

Didn't they try doing this back in 1999?

I remember each CD-R was going to double in price and people bought them like they were the last hit of acid at a Greatful Dead concert.

But nothing ever came of it.

And still, if we're only paying like $0.50 a CD-R right now what's an extra $0.53?

whatever.......I'll believe it when I see it......our Government says stuff like this all the time.....

Deep, I'm disappointed...surely you noticed the URL -

cb-cda.gc.ca/tariffs/proposed/c09032002-b.pdf

And you'll see they've tried the same crap over and over again. It won't succeed this time either.

Thank god it's 'proposed'
Allowing this would violate so many rights.

The relationship between CD-Rs and recording music governed by the RIAA is not surjective... Not all CD-Rs purchased are used to record copyrighted materials, in fact a considerable portion are not used in this way.

The recording industry has no right to impose a tarrif on something that is not wholly theirs to lay claim to.

Seconded!

I really like t know just how much of this 'proposition' really WOULD go back in to the hands of the artists....and not serve to repaint the pools of the industry's monopolizing big wigs.

sheesh...

This is the time to make ourselves heard... this law is proposed, but those capitalist bastards are going to try and try and try till it goes through.

There must be somewhere where we can object to all this bull crap.

Last time they tried for an increase this high, all that was tacked on was two or three cents. I wouldn't be worried about it.

also remember that a lot of starving and up and coming artists are the ones paying this tariff when they want to assemble their own demos, albums for consignment, etc...

retardo!

But why minidiscs!!

Aren't mini discs created so they can't be copied from digitally. Sony claims that recording onto minidisc is NOT piracy, that a digital copy chain ends at minidisc.

Ughh

<------- As if $10 a disc at future shop wasn't high enough. Thank goodness for ebay

i could be wrong on this but this is what i understand from the course i took at harris:

the blank tape levy was part of the phase 2 amendment to the copyright act which was introduced in 1997. it's quite likely that they haven't figured out a way to actually distribute the monies collected from these tariffs. so they will just be pooled until an appropriate method is decided upon. that's how it seems to work for a lot of royalties (for instance - neighboring rights royalties for performers on recordings have been in effect since 1997 as well but haven't been distributed until quite recently). so there's no evidence to say this will be going towards the wrong people. however, like i said, it's inadvertantly targeting some of the very people it's designed to help out.

this will be important to every person who records (plans to record) CDR/CDRW discs. This year Canadian government plans to introduce new tax on blank media which will considerably increase the price of every single CDR you burn. Proposed tax is 60cents for every CDR/CDRW sold! And more taxes on other types of storage media like Flash, MiniDisk, etc. You can find more info @:

http://www.sycorp.com/levy/

The full proposal is here:

http://www.cb-cda.gc.ca/tariffs/prop...09032002-b.pdf

You really can make a difference by signing the new Levy Internet petition (the last online petition was in 2000 and had 26,040 names on it which helped keep the levy low) Voice your opinions of the Blank Media Levy.
