Batman DOES use guns! But only when he really needs them. My referance: Batman: The Dark Knight returns.

that's a story that takes place in the future. the use of guns symbollizes how much society has changed and how much batman has been forced to change in response.

it is a FUNDAMENTAL characteristic of batman - he does not use guns and he NEVER tries to kill. that's what separates him from other vigilantes and that's the essence of what makes his character unique. he's not a boyscout like superman, and he's definitely got a mean/brutal streak, but he draws a very strong ethical line at killing. many of the best batman books and graphic novels - including frank miller's 'the dark knight returns', alan moore's 'the killing joke' and mark waid's 'kingdom come' - explore this issue at great length.

It was never like that in the comics- and I always thought that was a little lame in the movie.

i think the "joker-as-my-parents'-killer" was more of a metaphysical thing... sort of a representation of "the joker is everything that i sought out to protect the world from" kind of thing... i didn't take it to mean that the Joker actually killed his parents.. Bruce was just projecting the joker there....

(but i guess then he wouldn't have done it without the joker facepaint, i s'pose)

shrug

i'm sure i'm wrong on that.

the tim burton were artsy fartsy attemtps at comic bookdom... and shouldn't be reduced to simple "a piston couldn't take down a jet" comparisons... that wasn't the point of the movie... the point wasn't to bring the realism or authenticity of the comic book to screen, rather the obsurdity of the comic book (and even the TV show) to the screen...

i don't think Burton even expected to do another one....

in tim burton's original 'batman' movie, the joker killed bruce's parents. bruce realizes this when the joker says the line "have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?" which he remembered from when his parents were killed.

in 'batman begins,' the killer is the original mugger from the comic books, joe chill.

i wasn't just talking about the pistol shooting down the batplane, i was talking about the entire first two movies. tim burton used the most ridiculous elements from the worst renditions of the character, from the batplane scissors to the joker prancing around in a music video to the brainwashed penguins running around with rocket launchers. he had no respect for the actual CHARACTERS he was using, as evident by batman trying to KILL the joker with batplane guns and the penguin (who should be a criminal mastermind) being lured around by a piece of raw fish.

i used to hate hearing everyone talk about how it was so wonderful that tim burton was making a "dark" version of the batman. "dark" is supposed to refer to more than just the colour of his costume. tim burton's version was campy and insulting to the source material.

it wasn't even just that the movie wasn't 'realistic.' i have no problem with fantastical stories, as long as they make SENSE. in burton's movie, there were so many elements - such as why batman's bullets and missiles seemed to go right through the joker - that made NO SENSE and were not even explained. (if someone can give an explanation for that scene, i'd love to hear it.) it's as if tim burton figured, "hey, it's just a comic book movie, it doesn't HAVE to make sense."

his movies reeked of a lacklustre attitude and a lack of understanding of the things that make the batman mythos the most respected in the history of the comic book industry.

in kevin smith's lecture-movie - the one where they show clips of his lectures at various universities - he mentions a telephone conversation that he had with tim burton, in which he asked tim burton if he stole a scene from 'planet of the apes' from a particular comic book. tim burton's response was apparently a scoffing "AS IF i would ever read a comic book." to me, that lack of respect for the source material was abundantly evident in his two batman movies.

i still don't think we were supposed to take that "flashback" literally... i'm pretty sure it was meant to be a psychological projection... i mean... some 9 yr old suddenly remembering too the tea the killer of his parents some 20 year later?

but i guess... dif't strokes...

that's how i chose to interpret that "flashback".... and it helps me sleep at night.

more to the point, it's a TIM BURTON movie... it doesn't have to make sense...

and "being an artist" means you did need respect for the original source material...

don't it?

johnny depp as joker?

i dunno, as much as i sometimes like johnny depp, i'm not at all convinced that he could pull off the joker. he could probably do the retarded campy tim burton version of the joker , but i'm not sure how convincing he'd be as the sadistic maniac version that will hopefully be portrayed in the next movie.

like i wrote in the 'batman begins' thread, i HOPE they don't shy away from portraying the joker as the vicious homicidal maniac that he should be. he should not be jack nicholson prancing around like he's in a music video; he should be beating kids to death with crowbars (source: 'a death in the family') and raping girls in front of their fathers just to see the torment in their eyes (source: 'the killing joke').

christian bale is reportedly trying to convince warner bros. to release TWO VERSIONS of the next batman movie: a restricted version (which has awesome potential) and a slightly tamer PG-AA version for the squeamish. i personally think this is a BRILLIANT idea. it would please all the fans, and they would probably get loads of people seeing the movie twice - i.e. once with their kids and then again to see the restricted version.

of all the actors being discussed for the role of the joker, i like sean penn, paul bettany and crispin glover best.

i've been talking this yang for years, actually.

i know HORDES of people who refuse to go see
horror movies that are pg-13 because they KNOW
it'll be shite...

having one r-rated version and one pg-13 version
is the best route to go...

chances are, they actually started with an r-rated
version (trying to get away with as much as possible)
and then had it edited down anyway... it's not like
they'd be doing any more work...

kudos to bale for making sense.

Out of those three I like Crispin Glover the best but I don't know if he's manic enough. He plays a good crazy but more of a quiet creepy crazy.

some think they pushed the release date back on purpose, because the story deals with a terrorist bombing the shit out of london.

i wonder if they realize that the new release date - march 17, 2006 - actually coincides with st. patrick's day. and if they do realize (which i'm sure they do), then that could be viewed as a pretty bold statement.

I think it's just simply because of the competition it's facing for that opening weekend. One of which is Jarhead, a best selling account of the Gulf War that many are saying will have a good run at the Oscars.

FDM has learned that Topher Grace of That 70s Show will play the immortal VENOM in Sam Raimi's third Spiderman adaptation. We told you guys a few months back that "someone" has snagged the rights to the character of Venom off of New Line Cinema and it was reported a few days ago that Grace had been "bulking up"- so we decided it was time to put the pressure on. So there you have it VENOM! Now as for the other two stars listed above we've been told that Thomas Haden Church will in fact play SANDMAN and that James Franco will play HOBGOBLIN and not the Green Goblin II (like in the comics). No more info can be given at this time, but I've confirmed this with various sources and apparently it's quite well known.

What?

So I wonder if they will have Spidey bond with the Symbiote for a bit, and then have it transferred to Topher. I am hoping that Venom would be more CGI than anything else, because even a bulked-up Topher is wildly inappropriate for Brock/Venom. They could've gone with someone a bit bigger or more imposing...hell even The Rock would work.

OMG that fucking BLOWS. He's an alright actor but Venom?! Come on. I have yet to really enjoy these spidy flicks, their choice in actors leaves much to be disired.

Maybe they can get Paris Hilton to play Rhino. That would be a more accurate depiction.

Guys chill....I'm sure Venom himself will be mostly CGI, there's no way they can put that mouth on a costume and make it work properly.

I think they chose Topher to play Eddie Brock because he kinda looks like Toby McGuire so I think they're going to play off the "Eddie Brock is the evil Peter Parker" angle......

Either that or they'll toss a bit of Ultimate Spider-Man storyline in there and have them be friends from childhood or something.
