I also just recently saw something on tv for Sin City. The shot of Bruce Willis standing in the rain that totally looks like a comic book pencil drawing sold me on the film.

Sin City: From Panel to Screen

Side-by-side comparisons show why the upcoming movie is a literal translation of the comic book.

by Hilary Goldstein

March 16, 2005
- Frank Miller's Sin City comic book may not be well known outside comic book circles, but come April 1 it will find a much larger audience. The film version of Sin City, directed by Robert Rodriguez (Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and Frank Miller, is as faithful a translation of a graphic novel as has ever been attempted on the big screen. Rodriguez was so determined to bring Miller's uncompromised vision to the big screen, he quit the Director's Guild to ensure Miller could be given co-directing credit.

The movie version of Sin City tells three different stories based on the original Sin City miniseries and two others, The Big Fat Kill and That Yellow Bastard. These are three of the best stories in the series and it's a sensible selection, since each features a different male lead.

There's the original bad ass, Marv(Mickey Rourke), who falls hard for a lady named Goldie (Jaime King), only to get dragged through the worst parts of Basin City before coming face-to-face with a chillingly evil serial killer. The Big Fat Kill focuses on Dwight (Clive Owen), who gets mixed up with the wrong girl and finds himself aiding a group of gun-toting hookers. Lastly, That Yellow Bastard follows the adventures of Hartigan (Bruce Willis) who agrees to help a young girl (note the theme) and ends up tangling with, quite literally, a yellow bastard.

With the film only a few weeks from release, we thought it was high time to compare the movie to the comic book. While deeper analysis of the two will come the week of release, we have a dozen images for comparison. In some instances, the stills and panels look almost identical. If eyeing some stills isn't doing it for you, you can always watch the trailer instead.

^ check the link. it compares the original comic book panels to the screenshots. it's pretty crazy that frank miller is getting "co-director" status for the film even though he never touched a camera or even visited the film set (although the whole 'quitting the director's guild' thing sounds like an ingenious marketing ploy).

it was a 12 issue limited series that came out in 1986/87.

you can pick the whole thing up in a single TPB (trade paperback) format for $30 at any decent comic store.

and is it really as good as it's made out to be?

like...is it as good, better or just completely different than say Batman or X-men or Spiderman?

it's alan moore's best work, in my opinion.

it raised the bar for the entire industry back in 1986/87, along with other ground-breaking works like alan moore's 'v for vendetta', frank miller's 'the dark knight returns' and 'year one' and neil gaiman's 'sandman' series.

those works get credit for *raising* the bar. there have certainly been books since then that have been at the same level or better, so bear that in mind.

many people pick the book up expecting to be completely blown away and that's not fair if they have been exposed to stuff written by people that were *inspired* by moore. it's like watching martin scorcese's 'taxi driver' today. the movie may seem tame by today's standards, but it broke new ground when it first came out.

bottom line - if you haven't read 'the watchmen', you should pick it up. it's a *must read* book, like 'the dark knight returns', 'v for vendetta', 'league of extraordinary gentlemen', 'kingdom come', 'the ultimates', 'the secret wars', 'year one', 'son of the demon', 'preacher', et al.

i would never presume to pick "the best" of anything. i certainly have my *favourites*, but i would have an easier time picking a favourite movie or song.

'kingdom come' (by mark waid and alex ross), 'alias' (by brian michael bendis) and 'the ultimates' (by mark millar) would definitely be high on my favourites list.

do any of those 3 come in Book format as well (like the complete WATCHMEN)?

i trust you know what you're talking bout will.
I have always been a fan of the medium of comic books...yet i never engulfed myself in it like i did with music. In retrospect i wish i would've.

The one comic book (complete work) i had was KNIGHT FALL (where bane breaks batmans back after batman has a long night of kicking psycho ass. It was awesome and I read it like 10 times...unfortunately, the ending - which was big news then - becomes a bit of a let down now. I wish i could read it one time and batman would kick banes ass for once...i'm sick of him losing everytime.

************************************************** ******

anyway

thanks will.

such a loaded question

overall story or just one issue

I have to agree with Klubmaster Will Kingdom Come is one of the best, I have read that book 6 or so times.

The best story arc in my opnion is a tie between the Frank Miller's and John Romita Jr's Dardevil Man with out fear and Kevin Smith (yup that Kevin Smith), Phil Hester and Andre Parks Green Arrow Quiver arc.

Best single issue I can't narrow it down to one but to three Green Lantern v2 48 49 50

What if you lost everything. An entire city gone everyone and everything you loved are gone. You have the power to bring it back and do. You are punished for what you have done by the powers that be. That is what Hal Jordan faced. His home town wiped out and he uses his power to try to bring it back. Only to be repremanded by the Guardians *god like dwarves that control the universe* Something in him snaps and it leads him to going to the guardians. On his travel he kills every green lantern thrown at him and all the guardians except one. This story arc takes one of the most beloved heros of the silver age and in three months turns him into a vile villian who just wanted his old life back

the guy from Sideways and Wings is annouced as the new villian in Spiderman 3... but not which villian! If it is Venom, he wouldn't be a shabby Eddie Brock.

For some reason I'm thinking he's going to be a "secondary villan"

Possibly The Rhino?

I dunno....I've always thought of Eddie Brock being a bit more "frat boy/football player" looking.

here's the skinny from SpiderMan news @ Sony

OSCAR NOMINEE THOMAS HADEN CHURCH CAST AS
THE NEW NEMESIS IN SONY PICTURES' AND MARVEL STUDIOS' "SPIDER-MAN 3"

Latest Adventure set to debut worldwide on May 4, 2007

CULVER CITY, CA March 22, 2005 - Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Sideways", has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next chapter of the "Spider-Man" adventure, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.
"Spider-Man 3", which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J..
Production on "Spider-Man 3" is scheduled to begin early next year.
"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."
The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while speculation is rampant about which character is being called into action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming Church.
Since his star-making role in "Sideways", Church has been in demand. The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film "Charlotte's Web", and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' "Spanglish". Church previously appeared in such other films as "George of the Jungle", "330 Miles to Graceland", and "Tombstone". In 2003, he also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy "Rolling Kansas". From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series "Wings".

I agree.
Maybe Hydro man?

What about Electro or the Scorpian?

I hope they do Venom and I hope they do him right.

THC will likely play The Vulture. Or so internet chat rooms murmur.
Matthew Vaughn, who directed a film called "Layer Cake", has been handed over X 3. They have resigned Hugh who will shoot Wolverine as soon as X 3 is completed and Halle, Stewart and McKellen (Magneto is Back !!!!)are going to be signed by weeks end. Iceman, Rogue & Nightcrawler(A.C.) are also all back.
New XMen added are Beast and Gambit. Some rumours circulating that Angel may have an appearance. The Danger Room is also set to make its 1st appearance.
We'll see. Fox is looking to have this film in theatres for May'06.

Sweet.
Thanks for the info.

Didn't think of the Vulture.
Too close to the Green Goblin as far as powers go.

They need someone cooler.
Like VENOM!!

Hell, I'd like to see Spidey in the black suit for a bit.
That would be sweet.
