3rd time? There was more than one Punisher movie? Unless you're speaking of Dolph Lundgren.

I actually kind of like Thomas Jane as an actor. I wouldn't cast him in a drama but as a unidimensional action guy? He's actually pretty enjoyable.

Everyone rocked in Boogie Nights.

I dug him in The Mist, esp. with the über-nihilistic ending. You're right though, he proved himself as a capable action hero - Deep Blue Sea was a great central character debut for him, and his work in Boogie Nights was great for what little screen time he had.

He's got a really shit movie out there called "The Mutant Chronicles" with Ron Perlman and John Malkovich and Devon Aoki (worth watching for the crappiness) where he plays the lead. It's worth checking out to see what he brings to the table in terms of this kind of character though.

In other news:

Quote:
Robert Downey Jr. is living up to his title as Marvel Studios' Iron Man.
In addition to starring in "Iron Man 2," Downey has agreed to return as billionaire Tony Stark and his crime-fighting alter ego in "The Avengers" and a third "Iron Man" installment, guaranteeing the thesp a superhero-sized payday and his own ongoing franchise as part of a four-picture deal with the comicbook company.

Jon Favreau, who is set to helm the second "Iron Man" pic, will also exec produce "The Avengers," which is skedded for release on July 15, 2011. Pic will unite the Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Incredible Hulk characters.

Company confirmed that Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as Col. James Rhodes in the "Iron Man" sequels. Cheadle will also appear in "The Avengers."

Bah, I watched the Punisher movie with Travolta (2004), it was horrible! Someone who sucks got way to much control of that film. There was so much time spent establishing his family connections that the action really suffered. It's PUNISHER, if I rent a movie called punisher I want to see him punishing really bad, evil guys with kick ass guns. I don't give a shit about why he's mad, it's probably a safe assumption that anyone who rents the damn movie has got thier own reasons anyway.

Bah again!

I've been going on a supper hero kick recently, which is now moving into a vigilante justice kick because I'm running out of supperhero movies.

Watched Iron Man last night. Great graphics, some good tech but it had a slow start. I didn't like the Afgan scripting because it was a bit ignorant. The end fight scene made it all worth while though.

Spiderman 2 was similarily bad until the train fight scene. The script was actually down right terible though.

There are three supperhero movies I've seen on the shelf but am hesitant to rent Spiderman 3, the Hulk, Fantastic 4 #2. Are any of these worth renting?? (couldn't stand F4 #1)

Ok, another question... What supperhero movies haven't been done yet?

I caught Thor talk back a page or two, is there any other big names that might do well on the big screen.

(I'm still pulling for Aquaman because I have no idea how someone would make that good)

Answering my own question, looks like youtube and imdb have a disagreement over the 2006 aquaman, both look crapy though.

I dunno, I liked it better than the first one. They're supposed to be tongue-in-cheek but F2 had a decent serious undertone.

Nolan on JLA, Batman 3
Can the director see his Dark Knight in a team-up film?

by Jim Vejvoda

October 29, 2008 - Warner Bros. intends on producing four DC Comics movies by 2011, including Batman 3. One project that the studio has long kicked around doing -- and almost did this year until it fell apart -- is Justice League of America. The question was whether Batman, as currently realized by director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale, would fit in the more comic booky realm of JLA. Nolan thinks there is a place for Batman in such a movie -- but not his Dark Knight.

"I don't think our Batman, our Gotham [Nolan's emphases], lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization. It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist?," Nolan told the Los Angeles Times.

He continued, "If you think of Batman Begins and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position -- we didn't address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically -- that superheroes simply don't exist. If they did, if Bruce [Wayne] knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that's a completely different decision that he's making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It's a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation."

And when asked whether the studio is pressuring him to make a third Bat-film sooner rather than later, Nolan replied, "They're being extremely gracious. I have a very good relationship with the studio. They know that I really needed to go on holiday and take some time to figure what I want to do next. They've been very respectful of that, which is terrific and one of the reasons I enjoy working with Warner Bros."

Favreau Talks Avengers
Iron Man director on the challenges facing Marvel's team-up movie.

by Jim Vejvoda

October 29, 2008 - Director Jon Favreau, who is preparing to helm Iron Man 2 for Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures, recently gave an interview in which he discussed the challenges facing Marvel's live-action film version of The Avengers, which the Web-friendly filmmaker will exec produce.

"I'm going to get a little more involved now with what goes on with the other movies. I'm very excited about Kenneth Branagh, I can't wait to see his take on Thor and we're really looking at the (Captain America) stuff, very closely," Favreau told Ain't it Cool News. "For one because we put the shield in there and Tony's legacy… Howard Stark's legacy somehow is related to… there's some relationship between Tony's father and what was going on in World War II, in the Marvel Universe, and Shield, so we're trying to lay some pipe here so that when it all happens it feels somewhat inevitable."

The greatest challenge facing the filmmakers, Favreau says, is achieving a tonal balance for all the upcoming Marvel movies, and he cites Thor in particular as "the most difficult one to integrate into this reality. And if it can be properly done then you get a great version of Avengers. If not, Avengers is going to seem like Roger Rabbit with different cartoon characters from different worlds, you have Betty Boop next to Daffy Duck next to Donald Duck you know."

The director believes Marvel's decision to shoot Iron Man 2, The First Avenger: Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers at L.A.'s Raleigh Studios will help accomplish that. "I think a really good step in that direction is them getting this facility down at Manhattan Beach so that all the films will be working out of the same studio and shooting on the same stages and they'll be prepping and posting and we'll all be in that one area so we can bounce back and forth and hopefully they'll be a generosity of creative input between all of the filmmakers and writers and producers so that we could come up with something that's much more synergistic than anything that has been seen before. But it's a tall order."

Sam Mendes: Preacher Man
Perdition director to helm Vertigo comic book adaptation.

by Jim Vejvoda

October 29, 2008 - Road to Perdition director Sam Mendes is returning to graphic novel medium for the source material to his next movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendes will direct a feature film version of the Vertigo comic book title Preacher, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The project is set up at Columbia Pictures and will be produced by Neal Moritz (The Fast and the Furious, Stealth) via his Original Films banner. Moritz is also producing The Green Hornet.

As THR reminds us, the story follows Jesse Custer who has been granted "immense powers [and] teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence."

The project has been languishing in development for years. A feature film version was in the works years ago with James Marsden attached to star and Kevin Smith producing. More recently, HBO tried to turn it into a series courtesy of Ghost Rider writer-director Mark Steven Johnson.

------- ------- ------- ------- -------

^ best preacher movie news ever. the previous james marsden and kevin smith rumours were worrisome. i can't think of a better pick to make this movie than sam mendes.
