Advice needed on Injured knee

I've never had problems with my knees before, but the last few days my left leg has been throbbing and really sore if I bend it past a 90 degree angle. If I bent over or anything It would hurt quite a bit.

Anyways last night as I was walking out to Derek's car, I slipped on an ice patch and did a face plant and landed on my leg on a hard angle. It seemed okay last night at Limelight but I couldn't do anything more then the 'headbob' because it hurt. Then this morning I tried to go for my morning run and two steps in I had to stop because the pain was so severe. It's also started to swell up a bit.

Does anyone have any advice on what this could be? Is there any stretches I can do? Or has anyone seen a doctor for joints in the Tdot?

there isn't any stretching that will benefit your knees, so don't try any. you'll only make it worse.

see a doctor

Try putting a pillow down before. either that or find a plush rug to do that on....

RICE

RICE:

Rest
Ice (a bag of frozen peas, wrapped in a towel, works best)
Compression
Elevation

... and see a doctor immediately. Make sure you get some sort of physiotherapy / follow up. I severely sprained my ankle 8 years ago, didn't undergo any sort of phsyio, and am still dealing with it.

Peace,

Sabina

The knee I think is generally acknowledged to be our most poorly evolved / developed bit of anatomy.

It is meant to bend one way, with a little allowance for twisting, but walking alone appears to be a miracle for such an unsuitable joint to do. ACL, MCL, all those things inside, wreck them and they're wrecked pretty much for good.

If it hurts bad, seek attention, even if it means sitting in an ER forever with a book.

A sports medicine clinic might be a good place to go. I know Mount sinai has one and you can just drop by on certain days and wait (my sister is being treated there for a knee injury)

sucks..... I've had shoulder problems in the past. mostly tendonitis... it hurts.

From the sounds of it, I'd say your best bet would be to go with amputation.

TT that sucks!

If your knee hurts when you bend it past 90 degrees and is swelling, you more than likely have a stretched or partially torn ligament. In flexion the structures most likely to be affected are the lateral collateral ligament (on the outer aspect of the knee joint), and/or your posterior cruciate ligament (inside the knee joint), and/or your lateral meniscus (also inside the knee joint). Possible your coronary ligament also. Swelling is a pretty significant indication that one of the above ligaments has been affected. What activities were you doing just prior to the pain? Did you rotate your leg in a funny way? Hyperextend/flex? What type of physical activity do you do?

A lot of the time repeated stress over long periods of time can lead to chronic knee pain. I would definitely agree with other suggestions about icing to reduce the pain and swelling as well as going to see a doctor.

For the time being, I would avoid any strenuous weight bearing activities as this will irritate the joint more (ie jogging). Strengthening exercises are also great. Strong quads and hamstrings influence the stability of the knee joint as most of the movement of the knee is determined by these muscles. Do you have any pain in the muscles surrounding the knee? Pain on the lower back part of the thigh just above the posterior aspect of the knee joint is also a sign of sprain (especially PCL).

Anyway good luck, and take care of that knee!!!

Just another quick thought......

I just noticed that you said your knee has been painful pretty recently, within the last few days. If you are on your 5 day menstrual cycle, it could be your ACL as this structure tends to be weaker for women during that 2-7 day period. Rubbing of the ACL on the lateral femoral condyle (the part of your thigh bone that extends down on the lateral part of the knee) can stretch and/or tear the ligament. This only occurs in females. In any case, ice and doctor is best to know for sure.
