I've watched this movie a billion times over....

heh... maybe even 1 million times with mr.peej himself. I do remember spending an entire day devoted to donnie darko a year or so back...

We watched it three or four times that day? Definately 3, and more times that week!

The whole movie just gets under my skin. I feel like I know each character. I fall in love with Donnie and Gretchen each time. The soundtrack REALLY gets in my head too! Awesome soundtrack!

Donnie Darko is a supreme being, ( unbeknownst to himself ) capable of time travel, and or creating rifts in space time, and or capable of combining seperate timelines/alternate universes into a single one via the harnessing of "wormholes". He is a "good" being and thus makes decisions to use his powers for moral applications. He is also self depreciating and does things to help others, while sometimes hurting himself. His powers are "dormant" and he is not aware of them. Several "spirits" shall we call them, guide him on the discovery of his powers. He is able to see into the future and alter said future accordingly. Frank, "the bunny" travels back through time in spirit form to help Donnie become aware of his powers and to use them to save his (Franks) and Gretchen's lives by choosing to die himself. Frank also sends Donnie on a couple of moral missions as well ( wrecking the rep of the kiddie porn dude Jim Cunningham, busting up the school for firing Drew Barrymores character, tasks which in the end never actually happen, since Donnie alters the timeline and reverses those good deeds. The point of them was so that Frank could teach Donnie how powerfull he could really be. ) Roberta Sparrow ( the old lady ) is also capable of Donnie's trickery, and has been driven mad by becoming aware of her abilities. She's much less powerfull a being, but more inteligent, aware, and capable of understanding HOW the time altering works. ( she writes the book "The Philosphy Of Time Travel" in which she vividly exlains how it all works, another eye opening lesson for our dear Donnie ) At a young age she forsees the advent of Donnie Darko and his mastery of the time arts, and it drives her bananas. She spends her time waiting for this "masaia" to come and fulfill his destiny. The engine that falls through the house in the beginning of the movie is the engine that Donnie rips off the plane his mother and sister are flying in while they are in the other timeline. ( good ole paradox ) The people who are affected by Donnie's trickery all "remember" the things they experienced in the alternate timelines, but only remember them as dreams. (hence Frank being obsessed with the image of his own bunny suit, and Gretchen feeling the strange connection with Donnie's mom in the end.) Other interesting points: Frank is dating Donnie's sister and drops her off at the beginng of the movie. ( red car can be seen driving away from house during openeing montage, plus he "honks" when she gets home right before the engine hits the house for the first time ). The phatty oriental chick also has some mild time sight abilities and is aware of D.D.'s divinity. Donnie's teachers also see something in him that is "different" but can't quite put their finger on it. Donnie's shrink gives him placebos and also believes him, but can not trust what she feels about it.

Aaaand that's Donnie Darko basically. The kid can control time, but dosen't know he can! The movie basically aludes to the fact that GOD is the one who controls time, but that Donnie is a special chosen "vesel" of the time travel/altering phenomenon. So there isn't REALLY any powers per se. Donnie just becomes aware of, and can therefore go with the flow of, gods ultimate plan.

The movie also re-hashes the theory that every decision we make splits time in two, and two seperate timelines co-egsist branched off the results of each given decision. Donnie can decide to change his decisions.

God I love this movie!!!

so apparently the Donnie Darko sequel, S. Darko, comes out next week (straight to DVD). a friend saw it already and says it's an absolute abomination, which is disappointing but expected I guess

Anyone that saw Southland Tales or Domino probably could've seen that coming. Seems that Donnie Darko being good was the exception rather than the rule for Richard Kelly. ST and Domino were both total messes with almost no cohesion.

The directors cut explains the movie all too well, and it is a MUCH weaker film for it, removing all the mystery. Music in the directors cut sucks too.

You're right, he's only listed as creating the characters.

Which really only means this is directed by a poor man's Richard Kelly.

this sequel should never have been made. Even if it's half-decent it's ultimately pointless - pretty much everything is concluded in the final scenes of the original

I hear that both the scripts for Domino and Southland Tales were absolutely fucking brilliant over and over again.

Domino unfortunately got Tony Scott to direct it - who now likes to make movies that make Top Gun seem like quaint little Jane Austen movies. There's a really good story being told in Domino (even if it does borrow a lot from other films before it, like Fight Club), with some really funny and very clever ideas in it. It's just a shame that Scott was still in his "Man On Fire" crazy cam stage when making this.

As for Southland Tales, I'm still not sure what to think of it. It seems to have a perfect balance of great and terrible ideas, clever and awful casting and a lot of him rehashing what he did in Donnie Darko. I can understand why it was so vilified at Cannes - but I still want to see the director's cut of it.

If by "directors cut" you mean they cut out all the horrible horrible acting, then yes, I'd also want to see that.

pick up the directors cut...it explains the movie. and you will be disapointed, not nearly as interesting when you don't know what the hell is going on.

Just watched the director's cut earlier tonight and it was my very first viewing of Donnie Darko. Now I'm reading all over the place the theatrical version is superior. Guess I'll have another viewing sometime in the near future.

haha.. I watched the directors cut last night too, it was my first time seeing DD. I thought it was great movie, though it didn't strike me as "cult-status" worthy (to be fair, most movies don't – I guess I'm not really into cults).

So basically, the argument is that the theatrical version left more to interpretation and is therefor more mysterious and superior? Oh well, I guess I'll never know. Would still give it 8.5/10 .

Yeah, that sucks that you watched the directors cut. One of the only movies I know where the cinematic version is far superior to the directors cut. The directors cut is a big fail on this one. Spoils the movie imo.
