When YOU suddenly become the minority...

I got invited to a black friend of mines birthday party a little while back..

OMG.. how funny, we were the only white people in an absolute sea of black people.

It was like being transported to a fuking Coolio video! they had massive amounts of fried food! and partied very enthusiastically..

at first I felt a little out of place, but then I found the weed room and settled in with the pot heads..

really, pot heads of all races are pretty much the same.. haha

what was funny was the ultra PC guy I was with, who was a mutual friend of our black friend, which was why I was with him more than anything..

I wouldnt party with him normally..

how funny was it to see the upper crust suburbanite big shot suddenly feel out of control of things.. I honestly think he was scared or something..

sad really..

anyone else have any experiences like this?

I love black people!

they are very open and deliberate when they speak which makes whites kinda uncomfortable...but it's all the experience of life!

We just had black ski week here in Whistler.
The National Brotherhood of Skiers come out here every second season and they bring about 5000 to 11000 people with them. Everyone is just out to have fun. I receive more tips and invites to parties during this week then any other time of the year.
It's pretty cool.

i agree that you shouldn't generallize. people of all races are pretty much the same when you get down to it; some people are cool, some people are jerks.

i have had a similar experience when i played basketball. i went to a camp down in the states and man, were we ever sore thumbs. i never reallized how much of a difference it was. and in tournaments we played down there we found it interesting that there were school that were basically all white and then other school that are all black. it's kind of fucked up. very good experience though; very eye opening.

being the minority is a little unsettling. i gained a little more understanding of what some of my friends must go through just about every day.

I went to a New Year's Eve party years back, and around 2am, my friend--the only other white guy besides me there-- pointed out that he and I were the only white guys there.

Up to that point I hadn't consciously noticed (admittedly, *something* was tickling)... and after that point, I felt kind of strange when I was dancing.

But, we shared some fried chicken and watermelon, went on a crime spree, they showed me rhythm, and all was fine.

It’s not about being PC, it’s about being intelligent enough to not make generalizations as such. Not all “white” people are the same, nor “blacks”, “yellows” or “reds” ect… if they are too you, you’re worldview is pretty narrow.

PS it’s possible to talk without making generalizations, what you have to do is think before you talk

That's because he's white, and white people generalize.

true.

Sure that was a generalization, but a very relaxed one at that.I have no racist views so I guess what I thought might not offend myself would not offend any of you either...I was not thinking and am sorry.

I just thought it was an open discussion regarding those kind of situations so i thought we could be well...open!

come on folks,if we are gonna start chatting about something, let's say what were thinking without opening a bigger discussion about what somebody said!

that's why a lot of these threads go nowhere...because people get easily offended.

dude, that's precisely why threads go somewhere. debates are fun and everyone has their own individualistic viewpoint in regards to any topic of conversation.

this is a message board, after all.

sorry dude, i didn't mean to make you out to be racist or anything like that. I know you didn't mean to offend anybody. It’s just that generalizations sucks, they’re not true ever, like if I said all birds can fly, it might seem right to some, but to those who know that Kiwi birds, ostriches and penguins can’t fly, so my statement is false.

Generalizations are very dangerous as they will narrow ones view of life. I think we do it because it’s easy, we are trying to figure out the world around us and it’s easier to categorize and generalize to keep things simple, but the world much more complex and we just have to appreciate the complexity.

i'm always the only asian guy somewhere

I've been to the club sweetwater on eglinton on black night. I didn't move from my seat the whole time.

I've also been to polish clubs and russian clubs...i've noticed russians seem to have a problem with a korean guy dating a russian girl

threads do go somewhere, but somewhere else...they go off topic like this one!

sure it's fun to debate, but not against one comment and certainly when there are others to talk about(eg. postmod's crime spree comment)funny, but not needed, and certainly a stereotype that still exists which isnt true.

this thread is definetly going to ignite some sparks with some of the comments...but be open to everybodys comments and don't take them out of context.I said EXACTLY whar ADT said, but I paraphrased to the point that it was offensive because I told the truth...people of a darker complexion(is that cool?)act and speak a lot different from that of a lighter persuasion, the end result being that of uncomfortableness.......I really don't see the harm in that statement!!!

If threads like these go on the great debate like you said, then chill out a bit!

[PC police generating sparks]Please people, we have to be accurate. We use the terms "African Canadian", "West-Indian Canadian", and "Honky Middle Class Suburbanite Oppressor" when speaking of such things[/PC police generating sparks]

I you can't speak in terms of generaliztaion how are you gonna communicate without using an encylopedia, a dictionary and a thesaurus. You have a valid point, but I think terrawrist didn't mean any harm (?) by it, it certainly wasn't intended to 'generate sparks' (?).

GENERALIZATION!!! not all "people of a dark persuasion" speak and act the same way, neither are "people of the lighter kind" all intimidated by them. you didn't speak "the truth" you spoke your truth, and your telling me that in your world, all blacks are the same and white people feel uncomfortable around them because of the way they are?!?!? WTF is that.
