Brigit Marcelle accosted by pirate in House of Commons

A 21-year-old page has lost her job after walking onto the Senate floor during the speech from the throne to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Brigitte Marcelle, a recent University of Ottawa graduate, carried a sign reading "Stop Harper" and walked out in front of Gov. Gen. David Johnston as he read the speech Friday afternoon.

Senate pages are hired for one to two years to work in the upper chamber, providing basic support to the senators during sittings and in committee meetings, which generally means fetching water, photocopying documents and passing messages. They tend to be politically engaged, but this type of protest is unprecedented.

Marcelle went as far as to prepare a press release, which a friend distributed after she was removed from the Senate chamber by security.

"Harper's agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation," Marcelle said in the release. "We have to stop him from wasting billions on fighter jets, military bases, and corporate tax cuts while cutting social programs and destroying the climate. Most people in this country know what we need are green jobs, better medicare, and a healthy environment for future generations."

The release says Marcelle was a page for a year, but realized that working within Parliament "wouldn't stop Harper's agenda."

"This country needs a Canadian version of an Arab Spring, a flowering of popular movements that demonstrate that real power to change things lies not with Harper but in the hands of the people, when we act together in our streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces."

A spokeswoman for the Senate said Marcelle, who is listed as Brigitte De Pape on both the Senate page website and in her email address, has been removed from her position as a page.

Some snide interviewer on CTV asked "Why did you think the House of Commons was the right place to do this?" lol you fucking dummy. Why do news people have to ask the dumbest questions? Like when it's snowing like mad out and they ask tobogganers at a hill "so why are you here today?"

my limited evan solomon exposure has been pretty positive but he really comes off as a douche here. i think that's the first time i've ever called anybody that but i couldn't think of another word for it. well maybe dickwad would have been better.

Evan Soloman is awesome. i do agree that he comes off as a bit of a dick in this particular interview, but that's because he lives in the world of canadian politics and he holds the ceremony of our government in very high regard.

It's like last week when Obama continued to toast the Queen after the music started playing. In that world it was an unthinkable faux-pas, but to normal people it was no big deal.

So Bridgette's protest to everyone who lives in that world was like kicking a sacred cow in the tit, but to the rest of Canada it comes off as a ballsy move by a kid with a lot of moxy.
