Bad Lieutenant = PWNAGE!

Saw this tonight by my lonesome amidst the insanity and ridiculousness of a so-called retard movie I'll never pay to see. Tee Hee!

Honestly, Cage has redeemed himself. Herzog gave him some serious shit to work with and he PWNED it. I would not be surprised if Oscar comes a knocking for this performance. He was unbelievable, a total douchebag (which he's always the best at) and so burned with drugs it makes for a very entertaining and thought provoking must-see.

I'll let a few people say things about it first before going into one of the most unreal scenes I've ever witness in a movie (and when you see the movie, you'll know exactly what scene I'm talking about, cause it was all kinds of wrong).

I'm giving it five stars! It really is THAT good. Go see it! Screw New Moon!

Oh yeah, and Xhibit is awesome in the flick too, same with Val Kilmer. Eva Mendes is HOT.

this is the first movie in a while that i want to see real bad.
Cage is iffy at best in most of his movies, but i hear he slays small dogs in half in this one.

Dude, he slays small children in it. After all the shite he's put out (I haven't seen him in anything good since Lord of War, in which again, he plays a douchebag, and he's really good at playing fucked up characters like that) I had completely given up. But this? Combination of Herzog, Cage, and a great supporting cast (including a BRILLIANT performance by Jennifer Coolidge as an alcoholic), equals some awesome viewing. Lol moments involved too.

I think it's really neat that when former 'A' list actors like nicolas cage and val kilmer fall from grace and become 'c' list actors, they turn to the Germans and Swedes for work. Like Nicole Kidman did in "Dogville".

Hey man, it works if you work it. It'll pay off for them, more-so Cage though.

I would rather have a a broken glass enema than have to watch a film with nicholas cage in it, although I really want to see wicker man.. That might be worth it..

He beats up girls and is attacked by bees!!!

Apparently the films are only tenuously linked.

Ran across some classic Herzog in this Eye review:
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

“The crime story is uninteresting. It is a marginal event in the film. It is more about an attitude of evil — or the bliss of evil, as I call it.”

Dude cracks me up. I highly recommend seeing Burden Of Dreams (1982 documentary on the making of Fitzcarraldo) for more of this stuff... jeez, it really brings back all that stuff about the "harmony of collective murder" when he speaks about the jungle:

"Kinski always says it's full of erotic elements. I don't see it so much erotic. I see it more full of obscenity. It's just - Nature here is vile and base. I wouldn't see anything erotical here. I would see fornication and asphyxiation and choking and fighting for survival and... growing and... just rotting away. Of course, there's a lot of misery. But it is the same misery that is all around us. The trees here are in misery, and the birds are in misery. I don't think they - they sing. They just screech in pain. It's an unfinished country. It's still prehistorical. The only thing that is lacking is - is the dinosaurs here. It's like a curse weighing on an entire landscape. And whoever... goes too deep into this has his share of this curse. So we are cursed with what we are doing here. It's a land that God, if he exists has - has created in anger. It's the only land where - where creation is unfinished yet. Taking a close look at - at what's around us there - there is some sort of a harmony. It is the harmony of... overwhelming and collective murder. And we in comparison to the articulate vileness and baseness and obscenity of all this jungle - Uh, we in comparison to that enormous articulation - we only sound and look like badly pronounced and half-finished sentences out of a stupid suburban... novel... a cheap novel. We have to become humble in front of this overwhelming misery and overwhelming fornication... overwhelming growth and overwhelming lack of order. Even the - the stars up here in the - in the sky look like a mess. There is no harmony in the universe. We have to get acquainted to this idea that there is no real harmony as we have conceived it. But when I say this, I say this all full of admiration for the jungle. It is not that I hate it, I love it. I love it very much. But I love it against my better judgment."

This movie has nothing to do with the original Bad Lieutenant. There was some politicking on Herzog's part because the producer bought the rights to the first and wanted to start a franchise, but Herzog never saw the original. Don't compare one to the other. I mean, the movie is literally about a bad lieutenant, but the comparison ends there.

This movie, however, was one of the best things I saw at TIFF this year. I actually saw it twice. Cage is one of my least favourite actors but this (maybe along with Adaptation) is possibly the best thing he's ever done. Apparently Herzog told him on set to 'ignore all of your acting instincts and do the opposite', and it really shows. It actually reminded me of Lynch at times.

Great film. I'll see it for a third time in theatres.

I wouldn't say that Cage has 'redeemed himself' though. He still needs to be babied by a director with a singular vision like Herzog.

I'm eager to see this. Nicholas Cage is really working hard to get out of debt.
