Is this speeding ticket fair?

I am just curious as to what you people think of the logic for determining the cost of the fine.

Holy crap!
100 grand on a 25-over ticket? Damn!

That's quite an interesting system for tickets though...

And that is in US$ too. About $160,000 CDN!

I knew about this law in Finland for a while, but could never make up my mind on wether I thought it was fair or not.

It makes sense somewhat to increase speeding fines for those that are wealthy. Because one of the deterents to speeding is the cost of the fine. But a multi-millionaire is not going to learn his lesson if he simply got a $126.50 ticket for going 25 km/h over (that's what such a ticket would cost in Ontario). On the other hand though, that is quite an excessive fine.

Cheers ... Ian

I heard about this system a while ago, and I have to say, I like it!! But that's just me.

14 days of income for 25 over.

Sorry thats just a fuck over for anyone

6.85 * 8 * 5 * 2 (assuming full time at the lowest wage possible in ontario) = $550.

That ticket should cost less than half that.

I believe that is calculated post-tax however. And income tax in Finland (I believe) is at least 50% for just about everyone. However, they do get some excellent benefits for their money.

We're still talking about like %2 or your annual income for a 25 over charge. Sorry thats like totally insane!!! Picture an entire paycheck for a single speeding ticket.

No, I agree. I guess I was just pointing out that say you make $200/day BEFORE tax and $100/day AFTER taxes are taken off, then you would be charged $100 x 14 = $1,400, and not $200 x 14 = $2,800.

Still WAY too expensive in my opinion. No speeding ticket should cost the same price as a Porsche 911, for anyone.

Cheers ... Ian

The system itself sounds pretty reasonable, but 14 days!!! That's a lot of money for what a lot of people consider a rather minor infraction.

No, but he would eventually learn his lesson after he loses his license, David Letterman style.

A few points.

If $160,000 CAD is his 2 week salary, it wouldn't be too big an issue now would it?

Cops would be targeting nice cars.

And I have to stop writing right now, because I'm having huge deja vu and it's freaking me out.
