Ya, it was a going away party for a friend. So there were like 10 of us. I think we had sides, dips and other starters too.

Great place for a party!

Only had an issue with the girl but she was clearly in a bad mood.
The men have always been good. Surly and friendly at the same time. My kind of servers.

Mini cheesecakes for Mother's Day!

I don't really bake all that much so I'm really proud of this.

I got a basic cheesecake recipe and tweaked it a bit. I used pre-crushed graham crumble. God, so much easier to use.

I concocted a Jamaican mango topping with star anise, citrus rind, cinnamon and sugar. Very light tasting. Hope mom likes it as she loves cheesecake. Each year, I get a few really expensive cheesecakes but if I can make them the way I want, I might just do that from now on.

I'm going to try a giant cheesecake next.

Today I broiled some lamb. I have tried so many lamb recipes but I'll have to say that my favourite is still Mingster's Moroccan recipe. So simple and done in 10 minutes.
Perfectly crispy on the outside and medium-rare on the inside. So juicy.

I made a bean salad before going to bed with cherry tomatoes in a honey white wine vinegar dressing. Marinated overnight. Added some fried mushrooms and prosciutto today. Next time I'm leaving the meat out. It's meat overload but I do love crispy ham.

Good lunch though.

Made some side ribs on Sunday. Some dry with just my spice rub, the rest with a spice rub and finished with sauce.

See, that looks great. I did slowcooker ribs for the first time and it was all fall-off-the-bone meat. Like, I'd pick up a bone and the gravity actually pulled the meat off.

I had to make sandwiches out of it but never again.

Ribs should have a pull and not be saucy. It should be a bit of a struggle like we're a lion eating a gazelle.
Those look amazing.

Thanks Sunny. They were great - and very easy!

I removed the membrane on the back of the ribs, applied a spice rub liberally (and actually rubbed it in to the meat), waited an hour, and applied a little more. Wrapped them well in foil and roasted in the oven at 250F for 2.5 hours (note that these were side rubs, not baby back - baby back take less) until tender. Let them cool and then threw on the grill to get some char and start applying a bit of sauce.

I know your oven isn't working well right now, but if you have a BBQ you can do the same thing over indirect heat for a period of time as well or just smoke them.

Yeah buy a smoke box for like 9 bucks at Canadian tire, and turn your BBQ into a smoker also may want to get a temperature gauge for your BBQ so you know what heat you're sitting at.

I have side ribs in my freezer that need to be smoked this weekend those ribs do look tasty. I like baby back over the side ribs I always find side ribs have wired cartilage in them.

Okay funny story... Sigh, this was one of those moments in life where I just felt soooooo stupid. Like the woman who locked herself in her own car and called 911.

I called Butler's over to fix it. They do old appliances. The guy checks around and I think "god, this is gonna cost me a fortune..."

$40 just for the visit fee + $15 for each 15 minutes he spends at my place. Then he has to come back with parts and shit.

He asks me a few questions. He looks around. Looks at the clock and says "Did anyone change the clock setting?"
"No. I never did. But the clock does work after all these years."
"Okay, what time is it?" He sets the clock to a random time and continues to look around. He turns the oven on and we can hear sounds like usual.
I fiddle with the oven for a second to show him that it isn't working....
"Waitsecond... The light is on..." I say.
He feels heat. So do I. Before it was just making a sound but no heat.
He looks around more. I said "So lemme test the broiler."
I turn it on for a few seconds.
It fucking works.

All he did was turn the clock button and it started working.
Apparently (and I've heard this before), the clock can affect the oven. So he said to keep the clock set. And if it stops, reset it again. There is some connection there. Maybe it was set on timer and just stuck. Regardless, I have never touched that clock so someone jackass probably played around with it. Either my whore of a mother or one of my friends with their drunken fingers.

$67 later, my oven is fixed.

Sigh.

LOL! That's hilarious. At least you didn't have to buy a new stove.

Of course you can. You just need to use a match to start the flambee instead of using the flame from the stove.

Dinner on Thursday:

Grilled halibut, grilled Ontario asparagus, tomato salad with herbes de Provence and a 10-year aged Pedro Ximinez sherry vinaigrette.

Three kitchens in an Italian household. One for the Pope that will never show up, the second for day-to-day use, the third for the big events.

Dinner last night - a very important one that I converted a vegetarian into becoming a pescatarian. 20-something years of being a vegetarian - UP IN SMOKE. I'm very proud of myself (and the person that ate the fish).

Chevre, basil, sundried tomato crostini

Pan-seared, cornmeal-crusted tilapia with grilled asparagus, wild rice, and mango salsa

Creme brulee torching action
