Looks like the Karma Police caught up to you.

On the few occasions where we've had a police escort... they essentially used the same traffic management technique that we use on our own accord, and that is to stay together as a group and have people directing traffic at intersections.

Everything I've been told about CM in an effort to get me to come is exactly what makes me stay away from it. I am happy to quietly obey cycle laws and ride my way around town when I need to. I do not need to use my bike to make a statement.

I firmly believe that critical mass is a futile attempt to raise positive awareness for cyclists in this city.

I think your beliefs would be more valid if they were based on experience rather than heresay!

Why do I need to experience something that doesn't appeal to me at all? So I can be permitted to post my opinion in this thread?

Furthermore, I don't believe participating in the event would allow me to better determine whether it IS raising positive awareness. To understand that, you have to actually be outside of the event itself...

Brad, honestly the thought of riding en masse with a bunch of militant cyclists sounds anything but fun to me.

I'll send you a picture of it.

You've got the wrong idea!

What about riding en masse with a bunch of stoned hippies?

Whatever though... I'm off. wave when we go by at least!

so then how are you part of the solution? sorry I've skimmed the thread, but have you ever been to one of the rides? I didn't like everyone's behaviour, but I still went with my PLUR because it seemed like the best way to spread the word. During the rides I talked to many supportive folks on the sidewalks and also some in cars (yes in addition to those who were angy).

It's akin to thinking that biking in a big group is cool and anti-establishment and asking for people to admire you for being different.... collectively. There are plenty of ways to make the CM something safer that have already been suggested (such as a greater number of smaller groups), but that doesn't meet the "HEY LOOK AT US BEING ALL REBELLIOUS AND SHIT" criteria.
Well again mabye you should go. For the most part it is just average people riding their bikes who are supportive of the cause. As for safety, who's safety are you concerned with - that of the people in cars? The ride is deliberately slow. You sound like an old man mouthing off about rap music or marijuana.

Im organizing an event where I get a bunch of SUV drivers together and we drive around downtown looking for cyclists to run over and then pour gasoline all over them.

Hipsters? Toronto?

There are hipsters in Williamsburg, that's it. Toronto of course has plenty of underemployed, but it's a terrible faux pas to think of them as "hipsters", in the original sense of the word.

Also, with so many trees, a lake, and only two (or 3 now?) subway lines, it makes me shudder to think that there are people who consider Toronto not only urbane but also populated with 'hipsters'. It's a nasty shame.

When you fly over 'Toronto', you can see clear from hamilton to lake simcoe. The vast majority of it is trees or lake. Toronto has such a good thing going on with the (albeit cliched) "liveable city" that I hate to see them (miserably and inaccurately) aspiring to a pseudo-urbanity. Appreciate what you got folks!

cyclists always! disobey the rules of the road be it someone out getting exercise or a courier. I've seen many cyclists put themselves in harms way only to yell at the driver, even though they are clearly wrong

cyclists get no sympathy from me, they are the nucleus of alot of road rage. If I saw this group running a red against me. I'd mow those hippy bitches down

The funny thing is, when you hit a cyclist, they break their leg but you can wash the blood off your fender. By "fender", I mean the sort of chromed ditty adorning a nice pink chevy convertible from the foul year of our lord 1971.

I think road rage is an unfortunate side effect of traffic congestion that effect drivers and cyclist alike. Cyclist less so because by ignoring the rules of the road they can avoid a lot of said congestion. This is just IMHO based on my observations over the last 15 to 20 years living in the city. People are just becoming more and more impatient and less tolerant of there fellow man. All we can do is lead by example and not be a dick on a bike or in a car. Ever notice how when you do something nice for a stranger you often see them do something for someone else almost immediately after. It is pretty cool and if enough people start being tolerant and nice to others this chain reaction is bound to hit “critical mass”
