While getting all preachy I forgot my point. Every time I have run into The Critical Mass bike ride I have not received a good feeling from the group. I think that the last thing the ride does is encourage drivers to respect cyclists. Quite the opposite, made me pretty angry and I’m sure drivers felt more like running over a cyclist (not literally but you know what I mean) than anything else after coming in contact with the groups I have. I think if the ride had more positive attitude and less fuck you that it would be a lot more effective.

I heard on the news this morning the cop is definately suspended. What a douche.

Guy should get a pretty huge settlement out of that. But they said the rider is up on charges as well.

what the hell was the reasoning behind that?

the cyclist resisted arrest after being taken out.

Apparently this cyclist is the only one who received any citations during the demonstration.

wild. I was figuring maybe he did something earlier and that cop got radioed to grab him. B/C all I can see is maybe he was going a bit faster than the others. Or this cop just snapped for no reason.

My comment is directed at those who really do think it's a joke to do something like that.

remember the New York City cop who shoulder checked the bicyclist ?
he just quit the force, still up on charges, quite possibly up to 4 years in jail.

Nothing about the possible four-year sentence though - he has been charged with filing improper paperwork.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A New York police officer shown in a YouTube clip knocking a bicyclist to the ground during a mass bike ride in Times Square has left the force.

Patrick Pogan resigned as of February 10, according to a spokesman for the New York Police Department and Pogan's attorney, Stuart London.

Pogan was indicted in December on two felony charges, two misdemeanor charges and one violation after the video clip surfaced, showing him body-checking cyclist Christopher Long from his bike during a ride by the group Critical Mass on July 25.

Pogan pleaded not guilty. He is free on bail, with his next court date set for April 1.

London said part of his client's defense will consist of questioning the police department's training procedures, and he said events that preceded what is seen on the video should be taken into account.

"The video tells a small portion of what happened," he said.

Pogan arrested Long on disorderly conduct and other charges and filed paperwork saying Long intentionally rode his bike into the officer. But District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said the video "showed Pogan singling out Long and purposely body-checking Long off the bike."

If convicted on the felony charges of falsifying business records and offering a "false instrument" for filing, Pogan could be sentenced to four years in prison. The other charges carry a penalty of up to a year in jail.

The Critical Mass event was "a monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road," the group's Web site says.

...which means, basically, that he will receive the minimum sentence, whatever that might be.

Pot pedaler in a day of high drama

Police bike-push victim Christopher Long took the stand yesterday -- a self-described "couch surfing" stoner in red suspenders who told jurors he gets high every day.
"I like to smoke while I defecate in the morning," shared Long, 31, of Passaic, NJ.
Long sat a full day on the witness stand, spending more time getting grilled about his driving record, police record and bohemian lifestyle than about the criminal matter at hand.

Two years ago, while bicycling in a Critical Mass rally through Times Square, rookie Officer Patrick Pogan violently shoved Long to the ground.

The incident was caught on two videos shown at Pogan's Manhattan Supreme Court assault trial, which, for all appearances, gives the lie to Pogan's sworn complaint that Long had "steered" his bike directly into the cop, causing him to "fall to the ground."

Instead, Long testified yesterday, it was the young officer who strode over to him through the crowd of tourists and cyclists and knocked him down -- not the other way around.

Or, as Long put it, "He managed to halt my inertia and change my vector."

"Would you like to try that again?" Long remembered the 22-year-old cop taunting.

"Right now, how often do you get stoned?" defense lawyer Stuart London asked the sometimes snarky cyclist, who cheerfully told of his "nick-bag-a-day" marijuana habit. "That would be a $5 bag -- that's why they call it a nick bag," he explained, helpfully.

London also asked Long about his checkered past: including his Army discharge for failing a drug test, a fatal driving accident in North Carolina in 2001, and an arrest last year in Brooklyn for drunkenly smashing a side-view mirror on a woman's car.

But prosecutor Ryan Connors has told jurors that Long is not on trial -- the cop is, for misdemeanor assault and a felony charge of filing a false criminal complaint that could put him in prison up to four years.

Wait Pot Pedaler because he rides a bike or because everyone who smokes pedals in pot?
