Nope - definetely NOT a mellow band
Deltron3030 is a MUST have.
Anything by the Roots.
bahamadia is pretty mellow.
she was in a group called Natural Resource that put out some 12-inches before that herbalizer CD... they were ok tracks... doubt you8'd be able to find 'em anymore. She's got a nice voice... rhymes are pretty pedestrian though.
if you're looking for classics, these are some of my pics:
pete rock and cl smooth ****
tribe called quest
del the funky homosapien
souls of mischeif
gang star (or shit from guru's jazzmatazz album)
butta babees (not too bad from what i've heard so far)
smith and mighty (they do some d&b, but they also have some hip hop stuff-very good too)
dj addiction (kind of a blend of jazzy d&b with trip hop sounds)
amen tobin (trip hop)
dj shadow (god of trip hop)
there are a bunch more, but that's a start.
everyone's mentioned the Roots... and they're right. If you look up Jay-Z unplugged, every track is Jigga rhyming and the Roots backing him up live. It's really fucking good.
Check out Black Eyed Peas, Jurassic 5 & Dead Prez.
I'll def check out ones mentioned above.
Alot of this stuff being mentioned is more, I guess, Intelligent hiphop, not neccesarily mellow hiphop.
Good call on Pete Rock though.
What about Necro?!
i really like them, but i don't find them mellow at all.
"Mellow Hip Hop" ... "Intelligent Hip Hop"
Is that like,
"I am hanging (banging) with my homepeople from Oxford, we all have Ph.D.'s,
We never misrepresent ourselves we are always on the level, we tell the chicks we have big ****s but they correct us to say phallus and we feel bad about it later for being so mysogenistic and sad."
Cue the mad DJ scratching his dad's opera rekkids and two flying homegirls wearing glasses and labcoats with pocket protectors jumping up and down, shaking their posterior regions in time...
..and in the background we have Da Vinci spraypainting La (ma)Donna...
i've only heard two songs i think. the first video is really mellow. well, maybe not that mellow
dead prez are good, but not that mellow. i totally can't believe i forgot to mention black eyed peas and 5 though.
CC <-must totally wake up
oh my god, dead prez are the complete opposite of mellow!
unless throwing molotov cocktails at police stations is someone's idea of mellow.
J5 is SOOO not mellow either!!
And by intelligent hiphop I mean hiphop that isn't talking about money and cars, etc. It's more underground stuff, and often political/revolutionary in nature.
this is so choko's thread
I was always a fan of K-OS. Musical Essence is one of my all time fav songs. Heard he had a new album coming out. Any truth to this? Also check Common's second(?) album Ressurection. Straight up one of the best hip hop albums ever.
new k-os album ("Exit") has been out for quite a while... i haven't heard it but i saw him live in the summer backed only by 1 guitar and he killed it... so the album is probably pretty nice.
i was kinda wondering about what "mellow hip-hop" meant too... laid-back beats? slow rhymes?
anyways this track can't be described as anything but mellow... and they're hometown so steal the song but then buy the album:
"Pylar Sanchez"-- Da Grassroots
slum village. and anything else produced by jay-dilla!
by the time I reply I forget what the person who posted the thread wrote/asked.
As for J5, check out "Cut Chemist Mix-Unified Rebelution" & "Concrete Playground".
It's not close to trip hop, but still it's fun to listen to & makes me happy.
Dead Prez isn't all violent, they have some "political/revoluntionary" tracks as well. Meaning, "Propaganda".
Anyways, not bordering on trip hop. But it's my likes for hip hop.
Product Placement by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist
Massive Attack (although it tends to be a bit more r&b)
Del the Funky Homosapien
The Whole Hiero Crew
Quanuum (esp. the rattlesnake remix of I changed my mind by Lyrics Born)
Anything off the Ninja Tune record label roster
Pete Rock - Petestrumentals
Wu Tang (yes, I find them mellow most of the time)
From the Ministry of probably too late
Prime Minister Highsteppa
yesterday's new quintet
brilliant offering from the best producer in the game today,Madlib...all instrumental, but very tranquil and sexy.
slum village-jay dee produces a great LP in fantastic voyage, soft, almost a Rn'B type feel but good beats
mos def-balck on both sides is the best album in hip hop in the last few years and it is evident in pretty much throughout the whole thing!
Atmosphere - Slugs indie stuff
People Under The Stairs - Thes Ones indie stuff
Cannibal Ox - These people make all kinds of hip hop
Method Man (l like)
From the Ministry of mellow like Yellow
Prime Minister Highsteppa
just downloaded Atmosphere ft Illogic - Verbage

i never said they were violent, i just said they aren't mellow.
i dig them too, other than that awful 'mindsex' crap.
