Let's talk about Apu...

in an attempt to step back from name calling...my final comment was not intended to be defensiveness, it was an ironic comment to highlight the ridiculousness of making assumptions about racial sterotyping. in our specific case, the superficial assumption that 'apu is an indian-american who works in a convience store and is therefore a negative sterotype' is as ridiculous as saying that all white people are oppessors. i guess that wasn't clear enough.

wow...i wrote that^^^^, i was going to be nice, give you yet another chance to drop the 'i'm yellow and white society oppresses me' front that you throw around here every time you post, but, i go to review the topic and i find more shit like this:

oh, i see, the fact that i find intelligent satire about racial sterotyping to be non-offensive and in fact beneficial to equality efforts and that i'm offended by your white bashing equates me with the kkk.

that's pretty lame of you to say, not to mention extremely rude. but honestly, i shouldn't have expected much more from you. BTW thanks for highlighting exactly what i originally alluded to: you feel that anyone who disagrees with your opinions on race relations is a bigot, without recognizing your own (obvious) prejudices.

*sigh* i'm not even going to bother to continue this, you're far too pathetic.

I'm done with this topic. It's stupid.

I'm not a racist, like I said I hate EVERYONE equally.

That's really a load of generalist bullshit you've got going there, Rosey. Simple-minded, generalist bullshit. Perhaps you should turn that microscope onto yourself before you make these wide, sweeping claims.

I just reread that one and, actually, I do apologize for that. That really was out of line, I'm sorry. Heat of the moment, this is a topic that tends to ignite passions in a lot of people.

This, too, is bullshit. I do have prejudices - just like anyone else - but it's clear that you do as well. If you can't get past them, I suppose that's your own problem...

in the words of the immortal homer simpsons: exaaaactly. this is not the way to make friends, people!

and anticlick, not that i'm trying to discredit the validity of what you're saying...but you have had a tendancy in the past to be completely anti-tribe/anti-establishment. is it not entirely unreasonable that there are those who might remember you for such remarks?

But I am being kinda non-attentive, missing this bit earlier on...

    Not cool, obviously.

Not that anyone listens to me - seems like the only people listened to have to have TBK VIP status or something around here - but oh well...

So people have prejudices. And they come from being hurt, by past experiences. It's all part of you, part of your own context, perspective. And, while your own point of view may seem earth-shatteringly important, sometimes we miss the fact that everybody has their own baggage, which precludes us from sympathizing and understanding other people.

I've been hurt, for sure. "Oppressed," as Rosey puts it. I've embraced the Dark Side, too, because just like Yoda said, it's easy to do so. For me, though, it's a matter of getting older and rather than reacting one way or the other (which is easy), trying to understand (which is hard). Just like anything else worth waiting for, it takes a lot of patience and practice.

It's not cool to make fun of white people - but I think I understand why it happens. It's because people want to react, and not understand. It's the most simplisting kind of thinking - tit for tat, "you owe us 300 years, so a few decades and the BET channel ain't all that much." To dismiss it, though, as being just politically correct, is also being simplistic. When an injustice goes on for a long time, it becomes history, and it permeates everything we do if you're the victim of this injustice. It's a complicated problem... I just wish there was more Respect around so we can all tackle it together.

(Well, no one listens to me anyway, so I guess that's a pipe dream.)

Well being that they have 30 times the population of Canada. And arround 10x the number of PhD graduates they'd flood our market.

There are more engineers in Russia than auto workers in Canada. On average the Canadian auto worker makes twice what the russian engineer makes. If we allowed their degrees to hold merit when they imigrate here we might as well shut down all of our engineering programs for the next decade.

With the sheer amount of medical doctors from India we could replace every doctor in Canada with one at half price and still have a line up at the border. We don't accept the degrees because it would crush or education system by its sheer size. We accept the degrees from western europe and from the US because other than a few specialists they don't send us to many.

Many Indian degrees have no value here because they would destroy or supply and demand curves if they did.

    Far as racism...

Hey I'm a white male with a university education. I personally know as much about child birth as I do about racism.

i think anticlick and rosey are being grumpy and not listening to each other.

i think you two would probably be pretty like-minded about a lot of things.

Yeah, I suppose I have... from what I gather, a lot of people feel that way, though.

I do resent Rosey tidily wrapping everything up in a neat little package labeled "anticlick is a white basher." I strongly resent him bringing the Book(tm) into it too, when it's clear he hasn't read it.

Then again, it's probably partially my fault - a lot of people don't realize I only give Respect to people and situations that deserve Respect. I find my quiet, reasonable, Respect-able voice on this board tends to be obscured and ignored... hence the anticlick attitude.

I've often said I wish that all the groups that my culture (decendant of rome) ever oppressed could just pick me to blame and get over it. I'm more than willing to take the blame for the last 2500 years of death slavery and distruction. I'm perfectly willing to stand trial for every single crime fore fathers and any of there ancestors and any of there decendants commited.

In exchange all I want is to be credited for all the inventions and art that my fore fathers and any of there ancestors and any of there decendants created.

If nothing else european, culture would have its greatest villian and its greatest hero all rolled into one.

    aha! now i get it...

anticlick i've always appreiated your insights as well.

sometimes an alterego is neccessary to express aspects of our personality that might not have an outlet. i've always considered you infamous for trying to shake up the status quo...i think that often people should be kept from complacency and made to question what they accept as truth.

but can't we all just get along? turning a discussion on a (possibly) stereotypical character on the simpson's to personal attackes, references to the kkk, hitler and racist accusations seems to me to be a bit...uh, silly?

i wish someone would tell me that my overpriviledged martyrdom resembles a burning cross. [IMG] wotta compliment!

    Respect to y'all.

i alluded to it briefly, unless people already knew about it they wouldn't have got it. sorry, it was meant as a sort of back hand compliment...i have a lot of respect for anybody who can right a book about anything. let alone have it published and, i'm told, be relatively successful.

no, i have not read it. never said i did. i do have a vague idea of what it's about...that's not worth much, which is why i havn't said anything about it.

personally, i went to a highschool on the border of richmond hill. it was an asian dominated school, especially in the science courses. i was the only non-asian in my oac algebra and physics classes! and being non-asian/italian/african/arabic i became more than a little sensitive to being dismissed as 'a caker' or 'gwai-lo' (is that the term? it's been a while).

if janie thinks we'd get along, she's probably right. smart person that janie. god knows i have a history of getting agressive when my buttons are pushed. so i'm sorry too.

    peace,

I just wanted to say to Respect and anticlick and anyone else who feels as they do that , rest assured, your posts are not getting ignored or unappreciated. Myself, I often read and appreciate posts without posting in acknowledgement or offering a "good post, I agree" response, I'm sure I'm not alone.

It's clearer now. Would it help to say I was dismissed as a Banana Boy?

I went to elementary school in Sarnia (ya can't get more white than that), and I became fairly sensitive to things like fists and pavement rapidly approaching your face...
It's like Respect said: sometimes you wear your hate like old leather, it becomes so comfortable you don't want to take it off. I took it off a long time ago by writing the Book(tm)... but I put it on sometimes, especially when it's n-to-1 against people like jungleboy (as per Tribe tradition.)
