I just dropped off some jeans to get shortened and the price seem crazy high.

What is a decent price I should expect to pay?

What was the most expensive you have paid and what was the cheapest?

    hmm.

i think it depends on what type of hemming you get done (regular or European)

i usually get mine done European, and i think i pay about $14

Just got a pair hemmed and paid $8.50.

I miss my crazy old guy in Toronto who would do it for $4.

now how rude would it be to call and tell them to forget it and find another place?

23.99 for european hem and 16.99 for regular hem. WTF?

and not even quick service. seriously.

that's what the prices are like in my neighbourhood!

but if i could find somewhere cheap that's convenient (whether near a workplace or whatever) than great! but everywhere around me double the price for everything! then again i go to school, and work, all in the same vicinity!

My old guy in Toronto was on Bathurst between Dupont and College... But in Ottawa, I just go to any dry cleaner or neighbourhood tailor and it's between $7 and $10.

I can hem pants myself, but I'm just too busy and lazy to bother, so I don't go to a high-end dressmaker or anything - it's a freakin' HEM! :)

If it was for major alterations to a nice piece of clothing, I might consider somewhere a little more upscale, but for jeans especially - any dry cleaner will do, imo.

lol. what pisses me off is that you get a pair of jeans on super sale and then have to hem them and there goes the price of the sale!

not only that, they don't advertize the price before you actually gibe them the pants. and measure the length.

    i know! i'm 4'11 and 3/4!!! :p

i hate living in a rich-y area for little things like that!
but hey.... funny enough it's pretty safe neighbourhood!

but the pants! i've never gotten one pair of pants where hemming hasn't been necessary!

    [yes, even capris....]

Just piping in here to say that Jean Machine will usually pay the cost of hemming for you. At least they have for me in the past.

    oy!

it's times like this i'm glad that:

    a) i've got a fairly long inseam

    b) i've got a sewing machine

    !!!

i can't imagine dropping another $10 every time i buy a pair of pants.

I'm not downtown, but still... 23$ is too much.

$23 dollars is far too much.

Post what neighbourhood you're near and I'm sure we'll have some recommendations for you. I just had some pants seriously taken in (more than just at the waist) and it cost me $22 at Studio Kim, and I think hemming is about $10. It's near King and Bathurst, just west on King.

Poot gave me the tip. Thanks lady :)

I have a pair that needs hemming. My friend always goes to the guy near Over the Rainbow in Yorkville but i suspect it's pricey there due to the location.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a reasonably priced jean hemmer in the East End? Leslieville or Danforth or the Beaches perhaps.

    Thanks
    Lisa

I just took in some clothes today for alterations in College Park. Here are the costs:
    - jeans hemmed $10
    - pants taken in at waist $18
    - jeans taken in at waist $18
    - hole repaired in sweater $3

I'm so glad I finally did this! Now those pant/jeans won't be hanging in my closet completely useless anymore (I hate belts!)

I paid $20+ for a proper jean hem, but it was at some shitty 'stitch-it' place in a mall and I was desperado, but I got it the next day, or same day - can't recall.

It's $12 at my regular joint, but it takes a couple of days.

that's fair prices- hemming pants only really should take about 1/2 hr

You gotta tell them in the store when you try on the jeans that they need to be hemmed. I was told to go to "StitchIt" in the same mall, get em hemmed, and bring the receipt back. Upon doing so, they refunded me the cost of hemming. They've done this for me a bunch of times.

that sucks. like i said i'm 4'11 and 3/4 and it's clearly obvious i need pants hemmed. i was in jean machine for almost 2 HOURS trying on every pair of jeans in there. i have a hands length that needs to be cut! this isn't no big cuff 'em and go! it's a skinny jean and it needs hemming! i wish they had told me this, or offered it to me! they were $110 jeans!
