How much does 2 cups of grated cheese weight?

OK, I have this amazing recipe that calls for 2 cups of grated cheese. Since you can't buy cheese by the cup, i need to know how much does that weight.

If anyone would know the answer to this or have a fair amount of grated cheese already on hand that they could weigh for me i would appreciate it.

Depends on the type of cheese.

Some cheese packs tighter than others.

Just add whatever you feel like.

I'm sure it varies depending on the moisture percentage of the cheese

I would think it would be anywhere from 400-600 grams

That's about a pound to a pound-and-a-quarter of cheese. I think it would be significantly less - maybe a half pound. Again, pending the above factors.

I am using OKA classic which is sort of medium dense

hmmm.. maybe more around 200 grams now that I think about it. i guess when it's grated it looks like more then it really is.

but either way... once you've grated 2 cups it's not like you have to throw out the rest ;)

I'd go with 3/4 of a pound to be safe. Buy that much ... grate a couple cups worth, and then eat the rest.

tribe is so awesome for this kind of info! ha!

OKA cheese is so damed expensive nowadays that I would rather buy just enough...

It is for my Mom's cheese and onion pie recipe that tastes so good it is like heaven with pastry on the bottom and sides.

I L of water weighs about 1 KG..

So, if it's more dense?? probably more

    2 cups = 500 ml = 500g or more??

Sounds like a very cheesy recipe Alex..:)

Just go with 3/4 of a pound. It should be enough. If not, you can come get more cheese from my place - or just substitute something else.

It would probably be awesome with cave-aged gruyere or regular gruyere too!

This pie is so rich you have no idea, my mom used to use any kind of cheese but i find the OKA really decadent when you cook it. She also used to make it regular pie size but I make mine deep dish - like 3 inches deep... Haven't made it in a while so this is why i forgot about the weight of cheese.

Nice. What time should I be over to taste the pie?

I'll bring ice cream. What flavour Ed's goes with cheese and onion pie?

More cheese is always better than less.

So what you're saying is that I've still got plenty of time to finish my first dinner, pop down to Ed's, and then hop on the streetcar.
