Can cats go insane??

My cat addy seems to have lost her fucking mind.

She keeps trying to beat the SHIT out of my other cat -- they've lived in the same house for 2.5 years, and out of nowhere last week, she started antagonizing him in a severely brutal way....

Last night, we heard a serious rumble, and discovered both the cats on opposite ends underneath the bed... Addy's growling, Dexter's growling, and as soon as I pick Dexter up (thinking that he's the one being the jerk) it's clear that he's terrified.

We separated them, leaving Dexter in my room, and Addy with Spence downstairs. While petting Dexter to calm him down, I removed TWO of addy's splintered claws from him -- one from his FACE and the other from his back. Spence watched a movie, and I went to bed. Dexter curled up in a terrified little ball behind my head on the pillow.

At 4am, Spence comes to bed, and Addy plows through the door. We don't think much of it, until Addy sees Dexter, CHARGES at him, aiming for his FACE and they turn into a ball of growling, screaming, hissing fur. We have to dump a pile of clothes on them to separate them.

So Dex spends the night in my room, terrified, and Addy out in the house.

Come morning, Addy's still whining at my door to be let in. I have to "exchange" the cats, because Dex is still terrified. (sitting in a little ball, tail between his legs) When the switch is made, Addy's running around my room purring and wanting to be petted, but still looking around everywhere thinking she sees Dexter, randomly hissing at the air.

What. The. Fuck. do I do? I can't let them in the house together or they'll rip each other apart. They've never ever fought like this.

I don't think its insanity. My cat started doing that to the others in the neighbourhood but he's not fixed & that usually stops them, so he's getting fixed, OH MY .. TODAY !

Did any of them go to the vet or anything lately?

Something when that happens you have to go throw the "introduction" again.

nope, no vet visits, no re-introductions.

however, addy's still not fixed. she hasn't gone into heat in almost a year, still no sign.

    dexter is fixed, though.

i guess that must be the problem. but it's fucking WEIRD, man, i've never seen two cats that know each other go at it like this.

i'm worried if i let them out in the house together addy will try to kill him.

I really think it's the not fixed thing... that's what everyone told us... cos he's so gentle with humans but other cats, yipes.

i think it might be time to get her spayed.

now, on an almost totally unrelated note, can you please post a picture of her? :D

Yeah that could be the case for sure.

I know a completely crazy cat. Over the past 10 years he's gone progressively insane. He is an asshole.

Naming your cats after stimulant meds (Dexedrine and Adderall) wasn't such a good idea.

I can only suggest changing the names to Valium and Zyprexa.

do you have only 2 turntables? that might be the problem.

Yikes. Sorry to hear that Jess. Definitely get the cat checked out by a vet as this kind of an extreme personality change can be symptomatic of many different things..

Your vet will probably run through them with you but if you want to do your own research beforehand, a good website to check out is:

I think you should have them fight to the death...the one who wins is the one who truly loves you.

Please clarify ... Is this true?

If so, that is insanely funny.

she may be feeling territorial, cuz of the new-ish living situation. have you done any reading, jess? cats have really weird social rules, and addy and dexter have never *really* gotten along from what i've seen. you might have to give them their own spaces or something, at least for a little while.

    Sounds very possible as well.

Cats are not always good with change. They need a lot of reassurance to know that they are safe.

I know many cats like that, normally they are part siamese.

My Mother in laws cat has always been insane and hid from people randomly attacking you etc, but in the past year she is now the nicest cat you will ever meet. She's old (about 12 I think), something must have snapped.
