Opening DJ Etiquette
I was thinking about this the other day, what are some of the assumed rules an opening dj MUST (or at least should) follow.
(this is tongue and cheek btw, just me being stupid) (1) the opener must play at least 2 volume notches lower than the headliner (2) breakdowns in excess of 3 are frowned upon (3) the opener cannot play any production of the headliner dj (4) the opening dj can at no time attempt to upstage the headliner, a la Max Graham @ tonic. (5) the opener MUST shake hands with headliner upon arrival, and politely show him to the treble knob that is a little loose. A quick joke about the city (IE: weather) is usually encouraged. (6) the opening dj should at all costs avoid re-play records that the headliner may play (7) flashy uninviting clothing is usually frowned upon for the opening dj and a 100% cotton medium sized t-shirt is usually standard attire. agree, disagree, any more you guys can think of? |

(8) must compliment big.shot.dj on his latest shitty CD
(9) opening DJ must offer his dj whores to headliner (10) must offer a complimentary line of coke to headliner (esp. applicable to sandra collins & sasha) |

haha, that list is great...
I myself have always wondered the same... I think the opener should be aloud to play the headliners productions though... givin they're not the "latest productions" I think it'd help build hype... although it would be a shame to see the headliner play the same tune the opener played... |

i really just wanted to say giv'r after watching fubar last night...but you're totally right evan...there is a true talent in being able to open a party...get the crowd moving, but at the same time keeping it below full on banging tunes...some great sets i've heard from openers included disc 1 of sasha & digweed fall tour with either chris fortier or jimmy van m (i can't remember who's spinning)...definitely not easy to do, but anytime luke opens up the science parties is pretty well as good as it gets from openers... jc |

My hats off though to Jimmy Van M opening for the Delta Heavy Tour. He knew not to play his "usual" style, rather he chose to play the type of shit that you'd not normally hear as a warm-up. It was strange walking into the KH to here ambient kinda stuff on the big system. The funniest though was the opening DJ for Underworld - who supposedly was there - but no-one ever saw. His name slips me - but he falls under a rules that has yet to be posted. The warm-up DJ should not "show-up"!!!! ss Last edited by slingshot; 03-06-2003 at 08:43 PM. |

I agree with a lot of the points on that list.
Although sometimes the headlines are way overrated and you can't help to be better then them. |

Who the better dj is tends to be very subjective. Quite a few djs I've encountered doing warmups are almost seen to be trying too hard to show who the better dj is by pumping the crowd out too early.
A warmup dj is there to create a vibe for the evening in prep for the headliner. Getting the crowd to get in the right groove. Kinda like progressing the flow of music throughout the night. A good dj is the one who knows how to fit their set according to set times & headliner..... and of course, among other things. |
